He came into life with a necessary hope, fragile and innocent; perfectly dependent on the parent like every child would, but his birth was not planned for. He was to his mother an accident; an interruption; she could not bear the pain and the father had already taken off to the back of the dark cloud. He grew with the bad scenario: struggles, pains and wants were common in his life while growing up :inferiority complex was automatically imported into his life for which he had many times thought of suicide but won’t know what actually held him back. He hated love many proclaimed with an excitement of emotion, he could not explain what it means to be loved. He never thought any one could love him so much, so most times discard the preaching “Jesus love the whole world” and wanted hope somewhere else. He could not but envy friends and other children who had partial or full love from their parent or guidance for this was alien to him. He learned quite many pranks to survive. Many terrible philosophies were beckoning him for consideration: he had adopted some, and still contemplating taking some others. He just wanted to succeed but only with the option of struggles, conflicts and tricks.
In one of the less busy moment when he sought to relax, he decided to honuor an invitation of one neighbor close to this arena of labour. He really did not mean any business, while he entered the auditorium and sat non challantly, a young minister had mounted the podium with the message “Calvary the hope of new creation”. “Calvary” was a new word to him; this caught his attention, he wanted to know what this mean. The preacher went on to describe the need for this.
“Calvary was the necessary provision to cancel the catastrophes’ that happened in Eden” “Eden” sound very new to him also, but his interest was already highlighted for attention. The young preacher began to tell the story of his life. He was before in the street doing all sorts of things, he was really cruel about life. Tiod can easily relate with the story of this young man’s past, it look very much like his but how does Calvary and Eden brought such calmness , hope, joy and confidence he now perceived in the young man’s gesture and speech. He thought may be Jesus love is also partial but they often say “He loved the whole world”. He wanted to know if could be entitled to such love was mounting turbulent issues within his mind and he wanted an answer desperately. The young man said, things changed for good when I met Jesus. “How” rang loud within his mind “ I want to meet this Jesus, if he is really true”!
The young preacher thereafter continued thus as if he knew what was in his mind. He told the story of the pre- disobedience of men as stated in chapter 1, 2 and 3 Genesis. The perfect relationship with the God and absence of evil and calamity in the kingdom of Eden, the first abode of man! “This place was serene and fruitful before the advent of sin” he said sorrowfully. Our first fathers and mother sinned against God” he continued. “When the devil through serpent enacted discussion with the mother eve and deceived her to eat forbidden fruit of which death was the reward of disobedience. He gave to her husband also and they both sinned. Therefore Eden, the first place of blessing for man, became the first place of curse for him also! Adam and eve were sent out and all their offspring from generation to generation carry the seeds of iniquity which made all men irrespectively of location and parent became sinners; as stated in Romans 3 :23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; “each of these sins have the same wages “Death” as declared by brother Paul in Romans 6:23(For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.) However, God made a plan to bring man into the original spiritual state of fellowship with him of whom a place where all the curses of Eden as a result of sin will be nullified on all human who deliberately choose to come to the Lord Jesus but this provision is unavoidably personal upon recognition, confession of sin, repentance and acceptance of the savior of life as stated 1 john 1:8-9 ( If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness). Tiod attention was already arrested but he needed more information. “How could the event of many thousands years in Eden been linked with Calvary”?
The young preacher went ahead to explain subsequently the consequence of the betrayal of trust in Eden by our father and how this sin became looped into every man that ever came through man. He talked about the life of Cain the first murderer Genesis chapter 4:1. The need of flood at a particular time because of evil vices and the man Noah and his family and species of animals were paired “The judgment by flood”, yet God decided to preserve, protect and prepare this family and other creature for subsequent replenishing of the earth. He spoke about Abraham, and Isaac and the provision of the lamb. He spoke about Jacob, Joseph and the deliverance of Abraham descendant from the tyrant. Then he concluded, “In all generation, man is found of messing up every miracle with sin” He thereafter called everybody attention to one of many incidences and offences of the pilgrim in the wilderness.
“An incident happened in the wilderness as related in chapter 21 Number” The young preacher broke the silence. He insisted everyone should open and read from it for a while then he continued the narration “After a major victory just like when the first creation took place in Eden, the pilgrim sinned against God and serpent “oh fiery serpents came among the people. You can imagine hundreds of these people died. Fears, anxieties, sorrow and pains dwelt among them. They ran to Moses to help them entreat the Lord which he did, what a surprising solution and procedure for solution to the poisonous, angry serpent that bits these people. They were not removed, they were still carrying out their rampaging but a brazen serpent was raised instead upon a pole, you live while you look at the hung brazen serpent. The only one single serpent was the solution to the fierce, terrible, calamity and death ranging but pain and sorrowful people had to suffer when he beheld the serpent of brass he lived: a choice to live require a deliberate looking on the hung brazen serpent, the provision for redemption, require this act of faith on the brazen serpent.
He began to correlate this in the word of God with His (God) proposed plan for man that had gone into sins on their seeds. All men by sin are exposed to the pendulum of woe ( devil) moving to and from the earth, inflicting pains, calamities, troubles and anguish but at Calvary , Jesus Christ was hung for sin of humanity He never committed. He was innocent yet he was crucified and who ever looked on him will surely live. The process was hard and painful yet He bore everything, as the book of Isaiah 54:1-5 put it. He had to leave his throne, come into the earth, and live only 33.5years. He was apprehended in his innocence for the offence He never committed, flogged with whips, his flesh torn and a very heavy cross was placed upon him on the road to Golgotha; the place of the skull, multitude yelling and ranting at him. “if I were the Lord I could have displayed some stuff but , he wouldn’t do such a thing, he was constrained by the love to give life back to humanity sentenced to death” said the young preacher. It wasn’t nails or hammer that got him nailed to the cross, it was the love and commitment to bring life back to the dying generation that got him nailed. Tiod was neck deep in this man’s narration, he could relate with suffering that was thousands times far greater than what he had experienced.
The preacher continued the incidence in Calvary, the death of Christ automatically had three major provisions: the provision of the blood, the provision of the cross and the provision of the resurrection. However none can be accessed without the choice to which is prompted by the recognition of our sinfulness and wretchedness and the need and willingness to live despite the various bits of many serpents of sins and calamities in our lands. The purpose of Christ on the surface of earth as stated in Mathew 1 :2. He needed to be hung on the cross like the brazen serpents who when we deliberately looked unto will save us. The blood provision gives power to clean our horrible sins, the cross provision gives the power to handle the flesh, the old man, carnal man whose products in every human being is evil works, corruption and deceptions and while the provision of the resurrection consolidated our hope of eternal glory, these three provisions gave the sacrifice of Christ for humanity a complete and perfect work of grace.”. Then paused the young preacher.
“In about 20 years ago”, he continued, I came to the understanding of the first provision of blood having power to wash my sins away. Just like today, I took a decision to look at Christ sacrifice who was hung on the cross, shedding his blood for me. Though in the street with many pranks, walked right away into the front side of the auditorium and I confessed my sins, asked for his forgiveness and invite the Lord Jesus of Calvary into my life. Little did I know the implication of the decision I took that day, but it surely made all the difference you can ever imagine in a man’s life. Quite many of the young boys we lived in the street then had died for many incredible reasons: wasted lives in eternities! I met some of them few years ago and recently; in our discussions, they regretted that they should have taken the decision to follow Jesus. One said on a sick bed “my life had messed up; the whole of me had been weaved up in too many mistakes. I am seriously entangled in the den of frustration.” I felt so sorry for these ones, but I cannot but appreciate what made me take the decision then, but that is exactly what gave my life a difference. I could not have had opportunity to go to school, learn some stuff, and meet fathers, mothers and the whole lot of family in the Lord, who had shown the love of Jesus which I didn’t have any family to show to me. Through it all, I have got to appreciate the provision of Calvary which washed my sin away, gives grace to subdued flesh that produces evil and the hope I have today in eternity, the unity I enjoyed among the redeemed, the companionship and guidance of the Lord Jesus Christ as long as I maintain the right relationship with him. He is the God of the mountain and valley, the God of the day and Night. He never discriminates. That is the Hope and glory I called you into, the provision of Calvary that made all the difference in our lives. Many people and I standing in your presence today had our hope dashed until we met the Lord of Calvary and this is the eternal hope we have enjoyed ever since, this living hope I call you into also, come over here and look to live!”
Obviously, Tiod came out and surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus, this he never regretted, despite the storm and difficulties, he found the Lord faithful in all, had a great testimonies through the provision of the Calvary, A new creation he was and everything thereafter took a new course.
Songs, poem and books have been written about the experience of Calvary one of such is that written by William Reed Newell (1868–1956) a Bible teacher wrote a song that tell the testimony of the Christian experience “AT CALVARY”, of which I employ the reader to join in this blessed experience.
Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died
Mercy there was great and grace was free,
Pardon there was multiplied to me,
There my burdened soul found liberty—
By God’s Word at last my sin I learned—
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus ev’rything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing
O the love that drew salvation’s plan!
O the grace that bro’t it down to man!
O the mighty gulf that God did span
Thanks to Calvary for countless, wretched sinners, depressed , discouraged, abandoned and neglected people who found their peace and hope in the single effort of the cross of which I am one of the product of this blessed offer of love of God. I shall ever be grateful for this Love of God, to have joined this blessed family, prepared for eternity. Calvary provides a platform that never considers my background, the money I had or did not, and the people I know or not. It does not matter if my pedigree is connected to poverty or wealth, palace or prison, church or street, pulpit or pew, he just wanted to save me. He met me on the journey of which I was dragged by the cruel master, where I carried an over burdened load and said, “son, will you go with me? The decision of which value I’d never since but appreciate: it is the best thing that can happen to me on earth and to any man and I am very grateful for this. Calvary made all the difference.
