What Are Your Priorities?

In March, 2006, Donna and Angelo Mercer’s 3 million dollar house caught fire as wild fires swept through the east side of Oklahoma City. They frantically rushed around the house grabbing up as many belongings as they could. Firefighters could not save the Mercer’s house even though it seemed, thousands of gallons of water were utilized to put out the flames. As the Mercers watched their beautiful house quickly burn to the ground, they kept thinking of the things they should have taken and saved.
“We took such silly items,” Donna said, “like this bottle of body wash and our granddaughter’s empty backpack from last school year and we left irreplaceable family photographs, valuable papers and savings bonds, jewelry costing thousands of dollars—so many things that were more important.”
It makes one wonder about their own priorities, not only with respect to material things but more importantly in spiritual matters, family relations, concerns about community, neighbors, everything. Having a clear set of priorities might have helped the Mercers believe differently as their house burned to the ground.
One of the basic tenets of Christianity is being prepared for Jesus Christ’s coming. This means deciding what things are most valuable in life. Should I take a second job and leave my young children without adult supervision during the afternoon hours? Should I take time for Biblical reading, prayer and meditation if I have to let my afternoon soap operas go for an hour or so? Should I go to church services on Sunday to worship God over a football games?
Establishing personal priorities in life is a process requiring each person to pause, get away from the demands of life, and evaluate what they are doing in life. Although He did not have to evaluate His life, Jesus did this daily as an example to His followers, this is exactly why each Christian person needs prayer and Biblical reading; moments in their daily lives to talk thing with the Lord and to establish priorities (those things that are truly important). While present of earth, Jesus Christ gave humankind its two greatest priorities—Love of God with our whole heart and to love one’s neighbor as one does themselves. Are you doing as He commands you to do?
