For better or worse, our path has brought us to where we're out in the world at large with a little bit of understanding and a whole lot of trouble headed our way. But we can’t let fear stop our progress when help is on the way. We made it through forty nine lessons and heard the voice of God: now we are at the eighth cycle of seven, we have been back out in the world and we realize we cannot make it on our own. There is much evil in the world that is asking for our attention and we cannot get past it with strength alone: we are back before our Father asking for help.
56. Praise and Trust
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
For men would swallow me up and they fight me every day.
My enemies would swallow me whole, and they are many, O Most High;
When I am afraid, I will trust in You.
I will praise your word,
In God is my trust, I won’t fear what flesh might do.
Every day they turn my words against me, all their efforts are against me for evil;
They gather together, lurking in ambush for my soul.
Will they escape by trickery?
Get angry and cast them down, O Lord.
You know my journeys,
You’ve seen my tears that would fill a bottle.
Aren’t they all in your book?
When I cry to You, then my enemies will turn back.
This I know, God is on my side;
In God I will praise the word of truth, in the Lord I will praise your every word.
In God I have put my trust, I won’t fear what men can do;
Your vows are upon me, O God, I will deliver praises to You.
You have delivered my soul from death, won’t You deliver my feet from falling,
So I may walk before God in the light of the living?
Our Father has brought us up out of the miry earth and set our feet upon a rock. Our heads may be filled with visions of glory and we feel we are so very close to the land of promise but our feet are still made of clay. We understand that God’s will is unfolding in his great creation, but still we must fight every day to maintain our balance against those who want everything we have worked for. “Give it up,” they say; “You can’t fight it forever and we out number you.” We are outnumbered but our first line of defence is the trust we have that our Maker will protect us and so we praise his Word.
We won’t get angry but if only God would cast them down we could be safe. My tears would fill a bottle but comfort comes to us from the words He gives, the gospel of peace. It is in us, in our actions and thoughts and feelings that the influences from above and below meet. Physically we make contact with the real world with the soles of our feet. Spiritually, our soul is the battleground because it has value to both sides.
A little fear is not a bad thing, it teaches courage. These lessons give protection to us, they give us the strength we need, and they light up our inner compass so that we can find our way through the barren flatlands we find ourselves traveling. It is we who are here, fighting the good fight and no one else. Praise and trust is the basis of our strength and we are given the tools we need to survive. Heaven and earth connect in us and here a gift is asked and given. To keep our feet safe so we may walk bofore God we are given the shoes of the gospel of peace.
