This coming Friday we’ll be observing the attacks of 9/11, the lives lost and the people left behind. But we need to do more than observe, and we need much more than a moment of silence. We need to go beyond silence and memories and seek the wisdom, power and direction of Almighty God, and there is no more powerful combination for doing that than the combination of prayer and fasting. We need to make 9/11 a day of prayer and fasting for America.
Throughout history, days of prayer and fasting have changed the course of nations; they have also altered the lives of millions of people in their own personal situations as they have sought God’s face in personal relationships, career decisions and in standing for what is right.
Two of the most powerful witnesses to the power of prayer and fasting are to be found in the Bible in the persons of Daniel and Nehemiah. I would urge you to read chapter one of Nehemiah and spend time prayerfully considering his prayer of confession and repentance for his country, then adapt his prayer to this country. Read also Daniel 9:1-19 and consider his prayer for his people. Certainly take to heart Jesus’ words in Mark 9:29: “Some things change only through prayer and fasting.”
Suggestion: 24 hours of prayer and fasting (EX: 7 PM Thursday through 7 PM Friday). Of course you may choose any time you wish, but the important thing is to spend meal times in prayer rather than in eating. If you just fast without praying you are simply dieting, and that is not the purpose (do drink plenty of water and fruit juice). The purpose is to lift this nation before Almighty God, and seek his heart and direction for America.
This was the suggestion of Chuck Tooman, a godly brother in Christ residing in Michigan. Thanks, Chuck! You heard from Father.
