Marriage and Divorce…Is it God’s Will?

Sept 2, 2009
By: Rick L. King

I see so many articles on marriage and the divorce rate even in the Christian community. I see people wonder as to why a Christian gets a divorce without proper Biblical grounds. What I am going to write may disturb some, yet I believe that it is the truth.

First of all man can walk in the flesh or in the Spirit. Decisions we make are quite different depending on where we are in the Lord. Scripture says that we are to “Let” this mind be in us, which was also in Christ Jesus. Unfortunately many believe that just because that they are saved that they automatically have the mind of Christ. If that were to be true then 2 Cor 10:4-5 would not be needed. We are told “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”. It would not be necessary to get rid of our imaginations if we automatically had the mind of Christ. We actually can walk in agreement with three minds. It can be our own fleshly carnal mind, it can be the mind of Christ; or we can also walk with the mind of the devil. This is why we are told to “LET” this mind, as there is a choice involved by us. God did not make us to be a robot but He gave us free will to choose.

We also know that there are many spirits in this world that the bottom line objective is to kill, steal, or destroy. They come and deceive many. There are spirits of lust, fears, deceptions..Etc. So consider the root reason a person gets married in the first place.
I am going to make a bold statement that some may find alarming but I feel it is time to say this. Just because a person gets married does not mean that God was in it or ordained it. Where in the Bible does it say that once you sin that you must stay in the sin? Is this not the reason for the Blood of Jesus to cleanse us from all unrighteousness except from entering into a marriage that is not ordained of God? The Blood even cleanses us from marriages. God makes “all” things new, if we allow Him to and do it His way. According to Isaiah 30-31, we are in rebellion when we do anything outside of listening to God’s Spirit. That may be hard to swallow, but that is what is said. Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. Witchcraft is mind control. Whose mind is in control?

In the church we seem to have this religious thing going that regardless of the root reason that a person got married, that they must stay in the marriage except of course for infidelity. I am in no way advocating divorce. But I think it is time we looked deeper into the marriage thing and realized the scriptural basis for the marriage to be in the first place. How many actually sought the Lord and waited for Him to say whether or not it was His will for them to marry? How many were unified in the Spirit and were walking with the Lord and His will? The Lord gets a bad rap so often as He gets blamed for the things and decisions that we make when we don’t even consult or care what He wants over what we want.

Scripture says:
Mt 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Mr 10:9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Pr 10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Ps 127:1 A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

My question is this. Did God join them together? Is the marriage a house that God built? God said that His blessing makes us rich with no sorrow. Were they joined out of a sexual lust? Were they joined for fear of being alone? Were they joined for financial security? Were they joined….there are so many reasons, yet they may not be of God. Just because people get “joined” together does not mean that God had anything to do with it.

In the Old Testament God told people to do something that many are unaware of.
Read Ezra 10:1-4.

It happened in those days and is still happening today. I do believe that if the husband and wife surrender to the Lord completely and allow the Holy Spirit to reign, then God can cause any marriage to come together. Yet, the decision on that rests with the Lord as sometimes He has a different purpose for people. His ways are higher. His thoughts are higher. We forget that it is supposed to be as Jesus when He said that he didn’t come to do His will but the will of the father that sent Him. It is about Jesus not about us.

If Jesus is really Lord, then I say do without if in doubt. Wait on the Lord until you know that it is His best for you. The devil has many substitutes that look and feel good, but actually steal from you what God has in mind. Every good and perfect gift comes from God.

We all sin and make mistakes. Even the big named ones. They are human too. Until we really grasp the fact that in our flesh dwells no good thing and they that are in the flesh cannot please God, we are going to mess up. It is the Spirit that gives life. No one else can give real life. It is just a choice we must all make to go with God or our own desires.

Consider this thought. People are all looking for intimacy with the Lord and end up looking in the flesh for what only God can give to them. Often since that void in their heart is unfulfilled, they keep trying to find what they are looking for in a person. The only one that can satisfy this hunger is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Until they are filled with him, they will never really find what they are looking for.

Scripture says, we are complete in HIM only.

This is probably not my best written article, but I felt that the message needed to be said.
