Family Matters 1948
The long siege was continuing in Jerusalem. Asher was touring the lines with a number of other staff officers.
He visited one unit comanded by a British volunteer. The commander was busily talking on a field radio. Then he laughed.
Asher asked "What's so funny?'
The man responded, "Well that fellow over there says that the Haganah is a motley band lacking in all idea of military propriety".
"And?" asked Asher.
"And I told him the Arab Legion is a crew of desert savages."
"Makes sense to me", said Asher,"You really shouldn't be talking to them you know, though. Anyway it's time to go forward."
The officer replied, "That's fine. But could you ask headquarters if we trade positions with the company to the right? Maybe a bit farther? After all mother would never understand."
Asher replied,"I don't understand, what difference does it make? What won't your mother understand?"
The officer then said, "Well this is a bit awkward. But that chap up ahead that I was talking too? That was my brother-in-law."
