There is a wonderful verse in the bible that assures us of God’s promise to direct our path. It is God that gives direction. Along with this promise however, is a condition. The condition is that we acknowledge our way before Him. What is the difference between a way and a path? We acknowledge the way. He directs the path. At first sight a path is smaller than a way, but both seem to tell me about a place we travel on. The original language speaks of a way as a bow that is aimed at a target. Every indication points to a set mark. It is preparing to shoot at the target. The way points to a destination. This is very important to know, for a destination must be established before we can set out for it. The path on the other hand is not so much about the target as the way is, but rather about how the arrow that is released from the bow will travel to that target. Again, the origin of this word carries the meaning of smooth or smooth travel. This is also very important to know, for a released arrow is out of our control. One sets the target, the other steers the arrow. One answers the question ‘where’ and the other answers the question ‘how’. I have heard many people speak about seeking God for direction in their lives. This is a good thing of course, but I also know that these same people understand direction as to where they need to go, rather than how to get there. According to this verse though it isn’t God that sets the target but ourselves. When we know where we are going, we can receive direction from Him. It is like a road map which we never take out to read until we have a destination to travel to. A road map does not tell us where to go but how we will get there. Our way or target is connected to our identity or who we are. Our uniqueness as individual created beings along with all the gifts or talents that came to our being, establish a calling in our lives. As one said some time ago: ”A musician must make music; a poet must write and an artist must paint, to be at peace with themselves.” When we understand our identity, our calling or our destiny in life, we have established a target or a way and we can seek direction as to how it will play itself out in our lives. God promises that direction. Proverbs 6:1 - Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your path.
