Sujay, lifted his head from his note book and saw his mother toiling in the dimly lighted kitchen. She had just returned from work and was now in the kitchen preparing their dinner. She had not taken any rest since she woke up that morning. Now she will come to Sujay to help her with his homework. Sujay felt very sorry for her. Though he was looking at the book, his mind was busy planning a gift for her birthday tomorrow. He wanted to give something that is THE BEST, he wanted to show her how much he loved her, he wanted to express his gratitude for all that she has done for him.
He couldn't sleep that night. What could he buy for her? His piggy bank collection will not be enough to buy even a pair of good sandals, which would be of a good use to her. He finally decided that he will buy a pair of sandals for his mother by convincing the cobbler near his school and pay it slowly. At that thought he slept in peace.
Next morning, he woke up early and tip toed into the kitchen. He saw his mother at the stove and hugged her from behind. 'Happy Birthday mommy', he said. 'Thank you, Sujay’ said mommy, ‘ Do you know what I am preparing for you and your friends today?’ Sujay nodded his head in wonder ‘Your favourite payasam', said mommy. 'Thank you so much mommy, they are going to love it'. Behind him stood his father with a big smile, he handed over the neatly wrapped gift to his wife. And it was a beautiful pair of sandals. Sujay’s face grew sad. Now he had to think of something all over again!!
After the school, he took a clean piece of paper and drew a beautiful picture. He colored it and wrote how much his mother meant to him. He decorated it with all he could find and it turned out to be the most beautiful card he has ever seen. He placed it safely between his books and ran home to give it to his most loving mother.
The sound of the coins clanking in his pocket, stopped him for a moment. He looked around and spotted a bakery, he bought a piece of cake, picked a flower on the way and ran home. His mother was not yet home that day. He put the cake in a table and waited for his mother. As his mother entered the room her face bloomed seeing her son’s little surprise.
Sujay gave the card and the flower and said, 'Mommy, you the best in the whole wide world, and I want to be best child any mother has ever had'. 'You are the best son any mother can have, Sujay and this is the best gift I have ever received in my life time.' Sujay and his mother hugged each other and enjoyed the little piece of cake together as the sun went down.
