A legacy is what you leave behind when you leave. It is what people will remember you for after you have gone. He who leaves no legacy cannot be found. A legacy is a trace that one leaves behind. In historical terms, a legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another and from one generation to another.
Many people are good at quoting other peoples’ works and words; people who died a long time ago are still remembered and can be traced through the legacy they left behind. Who will quote our good work and words when we cease to live? What will your descendants remember you for? What will the world at large remember you for? What will be your legacy?
But if we want to know about the lives of those who went before us, we can be certain that those who come after us will want to learn about our lives. Even now can we be traced from the beginning of our lives? For example did we leave that good strong mark in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions that we attended? For all the places we have worked do people remember us? Do we leave hope behind? Some people leave hopelessness that people tracing them do not find any reason to continue. Which words or deeds do they quote from us?
People think a legacy is left by the dead and many people think they still have enough time. Our traces stretch back from the time we appear in this world to the time we disappear from it. That is to say from birth to death. Our actions each day, wherever we are, constitute what we leave behind when we leave that place. And if we leave nothing behind then can we ever be traced and found. He who leaves no trace behind dies a complete death (James B).
Jesus Christ can be traced right away from the time he was born up to the time he died. The 33 years he lived on planet earth can vividly be traced. All his deeds were good and that’s why up to today he is internationally remembered. Wherever He went, he did something good and for that reason He is kept in people’s memories for quite a long time. Although He physically could no longer be with them, his deeds keep Him alive and spoken of up to today.
A legacy reflects who you are as a person and what your life is about. Take time to reflect on the events in your life: the things you have accomplished, the people you have loved/helped and the memories that you cherish. Creating a legacy that reflects your life is a valuable gift to your family and friends, and can help ease your sorrow about leaving them behind.
Therefore, be very careful about your actions each day because people will remember you for either the good or bad things that you do. So people can still trace you for your good or bad actions or words. Each day we choose what constitutes our legacy. “No legacy is as rich as honesty” William Shakespeare said. So let us be honest to each other as much as possible.
