Once there was a lady who lived in a beautiful house surrounded by a beautiful garden. She had everything she could possibly want.BUT she was lonely.No-one ever came to the house because it was such a long way away from the town.
One hot dusty day a traveler lost his way. Hot, tired and thirsty he stumbled up her garden path and rang the doorbell....and waited...then rang it again. Inside the lady heard a strange noise, when she heard it the second time she remembered it was her doorbell! The traveler was just turning to trudge dejectedly back down her path when the lady opened the door.
“Excuse me, but I'm lost” said the traveler,”could you show me the way into town please?” “sure” said the lady,”but you look as if you could do with a drink first...would you like to come into the shade?” “Oh yes please,” said the traveler “It's so hot out here today and I seem to have been walking for hours”
He followed her into the house and looked round in amazement at the most beautiful and tidiest house he had ever seen. When he got to the very large kitchen they sat at the table drinking ice cold fruit juice and chatting. After about half an hour he stood up to leave. Looking at the clock on the kitchen wall the lady smiled and said “you might as well join me for lunch” Not waiting for an answer she went to the enormous fridge and got out lots of delicious food. Over lunch she told him all about her garden and how it was her pride and joy. Just as he was again preparing to leave she said, “let me show you my garden before you go”.
Not wanting to upset her the traveler smiled and said he'd be delighted. She took him into a large secluded garden filled with flowers, ponds, streams and teeming with wildlife. There seemed to be lots of little paths and secret places and each time he thought he'd seen it all they found something new! Eventually they arrived back at the house, “sit on the patio and I'll get us something to drink then maybe I could make up for keeping you so long by giving you a lift to town?” said the lady. “Thankyou so much” said the traveler. After their lemonade the lady reversed a shiny new car out of her garage and set off into town.At the cross roads the traveler noticed a sign saying “town centre 1 mile” but they turned the other way. He was puzzled but thought maybe she knew a short cut. An hour later the lady stopped her car outside the town hall. Relieved the traveler thanked her and left.”Come again soon” said the lady, hopefully.
Just over the road from where she parked her car was a row of tiny terraced cottages. They looked scruffy and neglected and had no gardens. Right in the middle was one that looked like no-one had lived there for years. The paint was peeling and the windows were filthy. It was for sale. She stood and watched as children played and neighbours stood talking.
When she got home she walked round her beautiful garden and sat on her patio to watch the sunset. As night fell she went inside and wondered from room to room The place felt empty. Feeling sad the lady went upstairs to bed.
The next day she drove into town and called at the estate agents office. “I'd like to sell Rose cottage and buy number 8 Gasworks street” she said to a surprised man behind the counter. She no-longer has a beautiful house and garden, she's very happy living in her little cottage and spending time chatting with her neighbours.
