Perched silently upon a leaf
on a hot Fourth of July,
as darkness spread
like blankets black
across a flashing sky,
a solitary bearer
of unusual gleaming light
blinked its tiny signal
a splendid awesome sight...
As I watched with half closed eyelids
and a stomach full of feast,
the last sparkler
now smoldering
and anthems again ceased,
sky lanterns of minute size
in silent unison displayed,
a synchronized light show
in the mossy glade
Wee beacons of the Creator
with exultation glowed,
for freedom won
the price was paid
His grace surely bestowed,
illuminating marvels
declared God’s grand design
fashioned in His image
our purpose is to shine
Rising deep within my spirit
a passion commenced to spark
complacency,
now put to rest,
expired in the dark,
my lips joined cricket chorus
with elevated praise,
for truth that was revealed
in nature’s noiseless rays
Enthralled with wondrous beauty seen
I still sat a captive, drawn
to this back yard
exhibition,
compelled to stay ’til dawn,
Winged determined torches flared
Then faded in the night,
renewed with deep desire
I too would be a light…
