Poetry
My tyre, round and black, is identical to other tyres.
Except that it's mine.
From a hill top it is launched by older tyres
who believe that having little tyres roll
downhill with them will
somehow better their journey.
So gently it rolls...
...gathering speed as it learns to steer.
All rolling downhill.
It is joined by other tyres.
The older tyres think that this
will be a good thing.
All rolling downhill - plus two.
No end in sight, my tyre barely considers
there's a bottom to the hill...
...so joyously steep and full of fun.
But one of the older tyres turns.
A different hill has caught its eye
and it rolls away.
All rolling downhill - minus one.
My tyre meets another tyre - a pretty tyre.
They decide to roll together.
All rolling downhill - plus one.
Perhaps if they launched tyres of their own...
...the journey will somehow be better.
All rolling downhill - plus two.
And the bottom of the hill is but a glimmer
in the corner of my tyre's eye.
It knows it is there,
but pays it no heed.
All rolling downhill - together.
The tyre launched after me by the older tyres
hits a stone.
Veers off the road.
Lands with a thud in the bushes.
My tyre turns back to catch a last glimpse
as the journey takes it farther down, and away.
All rolling downhill - minus one.
It now considers the bottom of the hill.
All rolling downhill - cautiously.
There was a place my tyre nearly came
to a stop.
Were it not for the tyres beside mine
it would have come to rest
somewhere between the last fallen tyre
and the bottom of the hill.
My tyre considers how quickly the hill disappears
and wonders what it would be like
to go back to the top...
...and start again.
Its tread is fading.
The rubber is worn.
The hill has taken its toll.
It reaches the bottom,
slowing as the hill gives way to flattened land
and tyres fall almost one with every turn.
Some just stop in their tracks;
falling on their sides they stop dead.
Some wobble;
left to right until eventually they drop.
Some give a sideways roll with a flourish,
as a testament to their former glory,
when rolling fast they overtook those
slower than themselves.
And my tyre joins them...
...with a thud.
Its rolling days no more.
And all the tyres it rolled with,
who still have roll left in them...
...turn and watch it settle in the dust.
