Learning to love means learning to lay down your life for others. It's learning to lay down your wants and desires temporarily to fulfill someone else's needs, wants and desires. It's learning to love serving others. It's finding your life again by living to give and be a blessing to people. After all, isn't that our purpose in life. Not to serve self and accomplish what we think we want, but to serve others and help them accomplish the purpose of God for their lives.
When we learn to lose our life in serving others, that's when we ultimately find the life we are seeking for. The joy that comes from answering the call of God is beyond any other joy we can experience. God didn't call and ordain us to be served, He calls us to serve. It's quite satisfying when we really discover this. It brings such peace to know that one day we'll stand before the Lord our God and hear Him say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Wow, the joy of serving God and His people. It's no wonder that the two greatest commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all that is in your being and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. And the good Samaritan helps us to realize that our neighbor is our fellow human beings, no matter who they are.
In that parable, no one wanted to put aside their plans to be bothered with the hurt man's problem. They pretended not to see him. But the Samaritan, one considered to be his enemy by birth, put aside his plan and his agenda to help this man. He didn't care that it might make him late for where he was going or how it would inconvenience him. He looked on the man and had compassion. He let Christ love that man through him. Love is an action verb. It takes action. May we all learn to let go and let God. May we all discover the joy that comes when we make God's priorities our priority. May we all learn to live to give and serve.
