Comments on Challenge Entries

Postby Come forth » Sun Mar 02, 2014 9:17 pm

Mike, when we left click to make a comment on a Challenge entry the link opens in the same window; which means that to refer back to the story we need to go back and forth with the 'back' button (slow and confusing).

I have seen some comments that other members find this a problem too.

I've overcome this by right clicking on the 'make a comment' button and opening in a new tab. However, I know it is reasonably easy to reset this button so that when we click on it a new tab opens automatically and the old window remains with the story.

Do you think this is a good idea?

Blessings, Graham.

Graham, I'm not Mike, but if it's possible to do, I'm all for it. People have been having problems with this for years, and the old "right click/new tab" option has been the only suggestion we've been able to make. Hope it can be fixed.

Most web building programs have this as a simple option (open in same window/tab, open in new window or tab) when the link is added. We want 'open in new tab' not 'new window' because that will open another browser window.

I've used that myself (I think it's a targeted link), so it will really depend on how buttoned down the FW system is.

I went in and made it so the comment page shows up as a pop-up in a separate tab. This way you can reduce the size of the article page and place the pages side by side so you can read the article and comment at the same time.

Lets see if this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Graham.

Blessings, Mike

Awesome! I've been using the right click, open in new tab option, but this will make it easier for everyone. Thanks Mike! :D

It appears there may be some issues with making this change.

Please bear with us -any and all who are experiencing 'unusual' page differences.

Mike is working on it! :sorry

Hello,

I had to go back in and change things back and post a message about right clicking instead.

The entire time I was working on it something was concerning me, people who have a hard time on the internet. We have many members with limited tech knowledge. We could not just do a target="blank" addition to the link. This would make it open in a new window under the same tab. You would still need to go back and forth between windows. We needed it to open in a new tab. The problem was when a box automatically popped up in a NEW TAB, touching the initial article box with your cursor made the popped up comment box disappear into a hat, well not really, to the tool bar. Many of our less tech savvy members would have thought it disappeared for good and be confused. The other problem was that the pop-box would not have a back button at that top. This created an additional problem that I do not want to get into but it all created a problem and the potential for billions of emails with questions.

So basically the button is the way it was with a message to right click if you want to. For those who know what a benefit that is, they will right click as Rachael does. For those on AOL and dial up and a less computer experience they can keep left clicking if they desire.

I do have a better idea if I can implement but I may need help. So for now it is what we have got.

Thanks for all of the great ideas though.

Blessings, Mike

While we're fiddling - is it possible to make it like the critique circle is (or was?) - so when you comment, the article is still on the same page, and you just need to scroll?
Just wondering...

Mike agrees Joanne, but he is not sure if he can do that. His fiddler got bent yesterday

He is preparing for a seminar next Wednesday so if he tries, it will probably be late next week.

We'll keep you posted.
