Oaktara Royalties?

Postby tomoral » Sat Jan 04, 2014 5:00 pm

Does anyone else have trouble finding out about royalty checks from Oaktara? Two of my short stories were published in a book of anthologies over a year ago and my emails regarding when I might expect a check go unanswered. The contract stated royalties after a year. I know it is a small check, but it is my first royalty check ever, and I am excited to be getting it!

Just wondering...... :thankssign

Lynn, I'm not sure, but I think Lynda Schab was published with Oak Tara. She may have some insight.

I don't want to say anything based on what I think I remember hearing, but i cant access their website or any of their pages. It's possibly not looking too good.

Searched a bit more. Their Facebook page still seems fairly active. Last post was December 21.

I looked around....you are right Deb....can't get to the website.....I left a message on FB asking about it....I am probably not going to be on their favorite list now, but hey! I got a couple of my stories in print, so all is not bad.

Maybe there is a problem with their website host at the moment. Hopefully it's just a glitch.

Got an answer to my email from Ramona. Oaktara is alive and well. Still no definite answer regarding royalty check. She did say they had gone to a yearly payment on royalties as the company has grown, although my contract stated six months. My stories were printed December 1, 2012, so should be anytime now I am assuming.

Thanks Deb!

That's really good news, Lynn. I was really pleased to see the website went back up.

With the contract about paying royalties, I think they probably have that changeable terms wriggle room in their contract. However, they possibly should have contacted all relevant authors to let them know about the change.

Glad it's looking good, though. Hope you get that first little check soon. :-)

The things is, she ignored my question about when to expect the check. She simply stated they had changed it to payment after one year. I sent her a reply asking again. No answer. It was published December 1, 2012. She could have a least told me to expect it next week, next month, etc...

UPDATE

Finally got an email answer...it seems it will be three to six months after the close of a year before they pay the royalties. So I guess I will be waiting awhile. :?

But just think how exciting it will be when you get it. You will have to frame it. :D

Tha'ts what I was thinking Deb, I intend to frame it, for sure. Unless, of course, it is for a BIG amount,(who am I kidding?) then I will have to take of picture of it instead.

Re: Oaktara Royalties? Still no answer....

Postby tomoral » Sun Apr 06, 2014 6:42 am

I am writing once again to ask anyone if they have received royalties from Oaktara. I was told in January that we would receive it 90-120 days after a year, and still no word. Another member was told they would receive theirs in January and she hasn't heard from them.

It's not that much money, it's the principle of the matter, and I have been very excited to receive my first royalty fee.

Anybody else out there?

Be a squeaky wheel, Lynn (and also the other author). Keep us up to date.

My distributor friend in Australia told me the other day that she is quite impressed with their books, so the quality is there. Just keep checking.

No. Ramona wrote me in March that the statements would be done in April and May...but the check did not come. When I wrote her in June and asked straight out if she intended to honor the contract, her answer was "Of course, we honor our contracts, we've just been very busy. If you look at our website, you know we have much to do."

It is now mid July, and no check....I am quite sure it is not forthcoming. So, other authors, if you sign a contract with Oaktara, it may not be worth the paper it's written on.

P.S. Just to note: The contract stated royalties would be paid after six months....it has now been a year and eight months.....
