You probably don't know that in Canada, Santa Claus doesn't say, "Ho, Ho, Ho!"

In Canada he says, "Eh, Eh, Eh?"

...and did you know that Norwegian dogs don't say "Bow, wow, wow," either?

They say "Vuv, vuv, vuv."

And I have that on good authority, from a Norwegian primer our dad used when we were little, trying to teach us Norwegian. Unfortunately, dog language was all I learned.

Do you know what my dog says? My dog says, "_ _ _, _ _ _, _ _ _".

That's right...nothing, nada, zip, zero. My five year old dog doesn't bark, bay, yip, growl, or bite...just an occasional whimper. Maybe Betsy was never taught how to make big dog noises. She would be useless as a burglar alarm.

Just imagine a beagle that likes quiet. After 45 years of having beagles that go "AARRRROOOOOO, AARRRROOOOOO, AARRRROOOOOO" every five minutes, it's refreshing to finally have one that doesn't talk.

The vet says there's nothing wrong with her, but can't explain why. Okay, she is part spaniel, but still...

When our dad brought home a blonde spaniel-mix puppy, she knew she was low on the totem pole and was very gracious in putting up with our aloof matron-of-the-manor Belle the cat. She was also a quiet little dog, learning how to fit in around the edges of her adoptive family. That is until Belle deliberately crossed the line.

I came running to see what had prompted the barking. Toni was quivering with distress, standing at the top of the steps looking down to the side-entry landing where the pets had their beds. There sat Belle, in Toni's bed, showing Toni that even what Toni thought belonged to her was Belle's to take whenever she pleased.

That's the only time I recall Toni barking...until the sad ending of the story (told in The Pale Green Sedan on my member page). And, that's the last time Belle provoked Toni. She heeded my scolding her "Shame on you, Belle, you know that is Toni's bed, now get out!"

Little doggies like Betsy and Toni can certainly wrap themselves around our hearts, can't they!

Very true! Betsy does talk to me, but not vocally. She speaks with the loving gaze in her eyes looking into mine. The special way she holds her ears convey excitement and anticipation. Betsy stomps her paws on the floor to get my attention.

When she wakes up from her nap, she quickly finds me where I am as if to say, "I'm checking up on you, dad?" After dinner every evening, she hops up on my lap just for a minute to give me a kiss on the ear or chin.

Yes, Betsy talks to me in many ways, and I believe she understands much of what I say as well.

No ice here today--just DREARY cold rain--of course, you northerners wouldn't call 49 cold. Y'all be careful in the real cold.

Chrissy, we've adopted your scones, in addition to our big fluffy golden biscuits!

Betty, Your tree is lovely.

Edy, I like your animal stories and Don's dog with the expressive eyes.

And here is a delightful song for you--especially Mariane and Don--

You callin' 49 cold?

When it gets up to 49 around here we put on shorts, drag out the lawn chairs, wipe on the sun-block, fire up the grill, bring out the ice tea, and have ourselves a nice deck party.

Yes, the thermometer on our back door window says it is 20 degrees, here, and it doesn't feel cold out, wearing just my year-round microfiber jacket over a fleece vest. My niece said she only needed her sweatshirt to take her dog to the dog park, but decided her flip-flops might be a bit premature. I agree. The parking lots are so full of semi-slush that the car floor looks a mess from what our boots track in.

It's amazing how a few days of below zero cold reconditions our blood anti-freeze, isn't it! :P

Thanks for the link, Verna. Although I have seen, and loved, it before, this time I got to show it to my hubby, who hadn't.

Well, I hate to bring this up, but this is the SOUTHERN porch. I think it's just fine if us folks below the Mason-Dixon line complain when we feel cold, even if "cold" is 55.

Verna, I watched the video. So cute! Looks like those boys had fun doing it, too. Loved them all, but the bass singer had me laughing out loud.

Speaking of laughing, Don, I enjoy your jokes. Some of them are groaners, but in a good way! Thanks for sharing.

I've just fed my husband and now I need to finish up a few things in the kitchen so I can watch the new Hallmark Christmas movie tonight. Y'all behave.

Just so you know...not all of us northerners have antifreeze flowing in our veins. Not many of us nap on snow banks. Very few of us prefer eating frozen food while it's still frozen. Only a small number of northerners enjoy soaking their feet in ice water.

For me, making humor about living in our frozen tundra is a way of survival. Really...we are wimps.

I for one wish I wintered in southern climates. I only tolerate the snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures. I'm not a polar bear that enjoys any of those things. The older I become, the more I dislike them.

You said, "I've just fed my husband." That struck me as funny. When my dog thinks it's time for dinner, she sits up and begs. Hmmm...

Betty Dee, I'm so glad you reminded us that this is the SOUTHERN porch. I know when you southerners have our leftover cold weather (maybe I should call it our OVERFLOW weather :P ), you poor folks aren't prepared for it, the way we Minnesotans are. And, we do wish we could lend you our down coats and snowplows.

But, just to correct the record, we have a Southern Exposure, too. It happens when the thermometer falls SOUTH of the freezing mark. :thumbs :brrr  :sofa

I haven't been on much because of the production at church, and I don't have time to catch up much right now, but I'd like to post to ask for special prayers for Sunday. We have two performances, at 4:00 and 7:30 PM Central time. We would love prayers for the 7:30 one, especially. It was going to be canceled (and at one point we were told it WAS canceled) due to low tickets sales, but then they decided to do it anyway. One of the main actress' husbands will be there, and he is not a believer. Tonight (Saturday) he went to his son's concert, called "Ambassadors of Praise" which had a gospel message, then Sunday night he's going to our musical. So we think something big might happen with Sunday evening, with almost canceling it, low sales, etc.

It's such a shame that money comes before the Gospel message. My prayers are with and for you and everyone involved with the event and most importantly for the people who will find Jesus through the presentation of His Word through voice and actions.
