For the Writing Challenge, titles and author's notes do not count (but author's notes should be kept brief). If a scripture is written out at the end of an entry, that also does not count.

In the body of your work, numerals and abbreviations would count as words. We have a word count checker who checks each entry on MS Word's word counter, and anything with a space on each side is considered a "word" by MS Word.

That being said, there is a VERY small grace margin with the word count. If your entry is over, but within that margin, it is still accepted. However, if you think you are over, you are encouraged to trim a few words before submitting.

We do everything possible to accept each entry, so if you submit an entry that is over the word count and it is early enough in the challenge week, you'll be notified and given an opportunity to resubmit.

I am so thankful this was posted! I was not aware that every word attached to an entry was not counted. What about an Author's Note at the end, like "This is a true story"?

:thankssign

That is exactly the kind of author's note that is meant, something short and referring to the entry :) Usually maybe a paragraph :)

I'm not sure of any margin in the word count at all; maybe there is, I've never tested it. But I'm not sure what you are saying anyway. If you are saying you are left out in the cold anyway when within that margin, then there is no margin.

Seeing as Bea is here she may be able to clarify the margin question. But a margin almost automatically becomes the new word count because many would take advantage of it, so it kind of sounds self defeating to me.

Blessings, Graham.
May we all get eyes to see and ears to hear,
A Revelation of His Word, crystal clear.
Admitting our need to be drawn in,
Less of self, more of Him.

My prayer for us all.
God bless us with the Revelation of His Word, Graham

There is a very small margin. It's never been specified for the very reason that you state; it would then become the new word count. But in the interest of grace, and taking into account that different computers may count words differently--or that someone new to the challenge may not be clear on what is allowed--the wiggle room is there.

Deb tries very hard not to leave any writers in the cold; if a piece is disqualified for word count (or for any other reason) early enough in the challenge cycle, she will contact the writer with the reason for disqualification, and will allow him or her to fix the problem and re-submit the entry. There are very few writing contests that will show such leniency to the entrants--one of the reasons that FaithWriters is so special.
