Perhaps Joanney will explain what she means concerning a loft bed, but allow me to describe them based on my experience. It is a custom-made bed frame raised up far enough from the floor so that the space underneath becomes usable as additional living space. They are popular in college dorm rooms where floor space is often very limited.

I designed and built four of them for my two kids and their room mates when they were in college. It was a designed 3'x 6' wood bed frame firmly attached to four posts that supported the bed frame at least 5'- 5 1/2' off the floor. A reinforced plywood deck served as a base for a 3'x 6' mattress. Also included was a custom built ladder attached to or near one end.

With the bed raised high off the floor, a 5' couch, or a Lazy Boy chair and side table, or a desk and desk lamp could be placed under the bed thereby using floor space that would otherwise not be available.

The loft beds served my kids well for two years, then they moved into apartments. One of them continued to use the loft bed there. The three unused loft beds were easily sold to new students for their dorm rooms.

Have any of you ever heard the mournful call of loons? That sound always gives me the chills.

A pair of loons will usually nest somewhere along our lake shore each year. For the past three days a loon has been swimming alone off-shore while calling non-stop for a mate. So far, its efforts to attract one have been fruitless. A willing knight in shining armor better show up soon, or that poor lonely loon will suffer a sore throat.

I have finally figured out why there are so many more squirrels in the neighborhood than rabbits. The squirrel to rabbit ratio is at least 15:1.

I have concluded it is because coyotes aren't very good at climbing trees.

Here's a link, for those not familiar with the sound of the loon. I rather like it, myself, since it is our Minnesota state bird. Sounds rather cozy to me. 8) Perhaps a bit mournful, like the mourning dove (another favorite), and not quite as cheery as my favorite Meadowlark the ND state bird of my childhood, but next to human babies, birds of all kinds are my favorite creatures.

I think they sound sooo sad.

I love to hear mourning doves. I remember it also from my childhood, but they make me happy. Sorta feels like all is well.

Parts of Arkansas got up to 5 inches of snow yesterday. Broke ALL records, and are still breaking them, for latest snow, for coldest temps, for lowest HIGH temp --40-- and it's not over yet! So, if it's still winter in May, does that we'll have a shorter summer? or that it will be the normal length but is going to last till December?

Yippee! I sold another story to Thomas Nelson Publishers for their new Christian book series, "It's A God Thing." I LOVE those checks that come in. This one was a Christmas story about a precious stone. :superhappy :superhappy :superhappy :superhappy :clap :clap :clap :clap :thumbs :thumbs

Cold, rainy weather here. What has happened to Spring? We'll wake up to 90 degrees one morning and it will last that way til November!

Congratulations, Mariane. I am so happy for you. You are a wonderful writer and I'm glad to see it getting out there.

I wish I had known that tip years ago. We grew acres of corn and would have "corn parties" putting it up. We even had kids come out from the city to pick corn and take home. It was wonderful. And there's nothing tastier than fresh corn. I shared your tip with others, including our girls.

The idea is the same as what Don described, except this one is not homemade and not as tall or as big. The ones Don described probably wouldn't fit in his room. It is about as high as a bunk bed, but is elevated by a row of drawers on one end and a small, built-in desk on the other. There is some space in the middle that will allow more floor space, but not enough to put a couch like is common in many college dorms, but definitely enough to provide extra space and room to play Lego.

I was wrong, though, about the discount. I thought it was 25% after 20 hours, but it turns out that at 20 hours volunteers got a 50% discount. So as soon as I got my 20 hours in, I bought the loft bed. Everything else that I wanted was small enough and a WANT so I waited until this morning's $5/bag sale for everything else. Didn't get everything I say yesterday that I would have wanted, but that is the risk one takes when waiting for the $5/bag rather than buying it at 50 % off. But like I said, they were WANTS, not needs. I didn't miss anything that I wanted bad enough to pay more, so I didn't really need them.

Thanks Joanney! It looks like a good idea for people with grandkids, too. LOL

I sent out the corn link to several people as well as posting it on here. Edy was careful enough to research it a bit more and though it's very popular, it seems, with the camping crowd, it does come with a warning which makes me unable to endorse it.

Thanks, Edy!

This is the method we have always used for corn on the cob:

Place six ears of corn in a 9” x 15” glass baking dish.
Add ½ cup of water, and tightly cover dish with plastic wrap. Vent one corner.
Cook in microwave oven 2 3/4 to 3 minutes per ear. Note: Disengage rotating function.

Turns out great every time!
