About Spammers

Postby deejay » Tue Mar 26, 2013 1:58 pm

I see we have someone trying to sell kitchen cabinets again. I'm a Peer Moderator on Cat Channel's community forum, and I've had to deal with them as well. We tend, however, to get more people trying to sell electronics. We once had a nice Chinese lady trying to sell cat furniture, but she was so nice we let her stay awhile. When there was a big earthquake in China, we asked about her welfare; she said she and her family were okay, they were far from the epicenter.

What I do to deal with spammers is, we have a "Report Bad Posts" area, and I just scroll down to the bottom of the page of the thread with the spam, click on a window that gives me the option of sending it to the bad post thread, check the box by the bad post, then click on the send button, and it's there. If you want to visit to see what I mean, go to www.catchannel.com/community ; my handle there is imtripodsmom .

Every post has a triangle on it, click that to report it.

Trust me that we mods are looking for them, reporting/locking them. We have to leave them till Deb, or someone with Admin rights, goes into the profile and gives it a perma ban. Once that happens, the post is deleted. Since Deb usually does it and is in a totally different time zone so we have to wait until she is awake.

Cat Channel also has a report button, but it doesn't seem to work all that well. I get reports, but since they go to my Yahoo account, the link isn't clickable. :x I was just commenting on how we do things, not criticizing. How's everything in your neck of the woods?

Yeah I saw it and did the triangle thibngy and mentioned it to the higher-ups like Mike, Bea and Deb. I did notice that the Pacific Coast Rest Stop has a triangle thingie and I mentioned that too and was afraid one day the whole thread will disappear since I couldn't find it on a post only in the index, but someone has removed it and I am so grateful!

I can't imagine why this firm did illegal advertising, as it seems such a good and professional company and their kitchen stuff seemed fabulous!

But good on you Shari for locking it off, can't have such stuff going off on a Christian site.

Maybe we could start a classified advertising section in the forum and after we have locked out the spanners tell them they can plonk their adverts there for $...? and get some cash in for FWs.

It's not about this being a Christian site (sarcasm noted). It's not about their content, however a lot of spammers are advertising porn and other illegal things, or use a bait and switch on their links, seeming like they are a good company on the surface, but the links go to spam. It's about getting something for nothing. We allow limited advertising by long time members, like when they publish a book.

And there is a way to place advertisement on FW:

Oh and Collin, though Shari is great about catching spammers, and I am so thankful for that :thankssign especially since a hacker got in a while ago and changed my signature to something quite vile, but the particular one to which you referred was reported by me and Bea did the locking out. But I know Shari has prevented a lot of stuff that could be bad in so many respects and I want to make sure she knows how much I appreciate it. It's not easy to moderate all the threads, keep up on your own writing, encourage others, take care of kids and many also have a job, not to mention the work inside the house. So thank you to everyone behind the scenes that work hard to keep us safe. :thankssign

Shann I'm for FWs 100%, what do you think about my idea for making extra cash or won't you allow that?

Oh I know you love FW Collin, I was just teasing. Shari is so fast in pointing things out I was proud that I spotted one before she did! Though I think I logged on just minutes after the spammer did! :D
I do think they have an advertising section though which is a great idea, as long as it is moral and keeps the site up and running, I'm all for it.

Mike advised that there is a classified section at FW's called the Marketplace, but he said there is relatively :sorry no activity. He also stated that spammers wouldn't be interested in a classified ad as the way they operate is to blanket post 1000's of sites to find a response for free.
