Devotional Market

Postby chrisg » Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:26 pm

Hello...I am a newbie...but submitted my first challenge article last week for "Key". I received many comments on my "devotional" and had not realized it was one. Is there a need for devotionals in today's market? Can you suggest a particular market that you like? Here is my challenge article from last week: (I did not make the top three) :( Thank you!

Hi there, I write devotionals and have my own devotional site here that you can view and I am always looking for new writers. http://www.knittedtogetherbygod.com.

I haven't done the research on it, but I see it more as a ministry than anything else. I think that's what has set things apart for me. I don't see it a writing concept or as a money maker, if that is what you are asking. Many of the websites like mine, do not pay for devotionals. Mainly because they do use them as a ministry and as a ministry you are often on a low budget to function. So it often makes it hard for us to offer income for those types of things. This has just been my experience with having a devotional site and one I've seen from trying to submit to other places as well. So, just keep that in mind, if your heart is in for the right reason and you truly want your work to minister to others, that's the place to begin is within your heart. Where do you see God taking you with it? Those are questions you have to ask yourself when writing devotionals as a "business" or for "pay."

Don't get me wrong, there are some markets out there and places that do pay for your work. You just have to do the research on it. Check your Writer's Market and you will find the ones that do pay. You just have to make sure that you are in accordance with their guidelines. :) Hope this helps.

Thank you Christine..(good name by the way)...I just saw this post, sorry I am so late with my reply. I appreciate your comments and encouragement. It is much easier for me to write devotionals and non-fiction, but most of Faithwriters articles seem to be fiction or poetry with the use of dialog...and these are the ones that also place higher in the contest levels. I do like to write from the heart and want to minister to people, but I also need to be earning some money too. Maybe I should concentrate on another genre to stretch my writing capabilities. I love your slogan on your website: "Mending hearts one devotion at a time"....(hope I got that right) I pray for continued blessings on your site..and if you have a need for a particular devotional topic, I would be glad to write one for you. :D
Thanks again...Chris

Chris,

So glad to hear back from you. I'm always in need of good writers for our site. The way it works to submit is to review the guidelines page very closely. You'd be surprised how many writers submit something without reviewing the guidelines and have to send it back because they didn't follow them! So read them closely. My email address and how to get in touch with me is all on that page. We use the KJV version for all of our scriptures. Many of our writers use www.biblegateway.com to retrieve the scriptures for their devotional. You are more than welcomed to copy and paste them from BibleGateway as I've already requested permission from them.

We don't have particular categories for our devotionals, I let my writers write from their hearts. With that being said, we do tend to write most of our devotionals for someone who is hurting, but it really doesn't matter. What I'd like for you to do is to get a sample devotional together that you wouldn't mind it being posted on our site, because if I approve them, I will use that devotional you sent me. Unless of course, you tell me otherwise. I'd welcome you to submit that. :) Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for your interest. :)

By the way, I want to make sure its clear that we DO NOT pay anything to our writers at this point as it is a ministry. However, we do offer a free book once our devotionals have been published. So in turn you are kind of getting paid. :)

Thanks and Blessing, Christine :)
Look forward to reading your work.
