ACCENT on the Challenge

Postby Deb Porter » Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:52 pm

This week's topic should be a lot of fun, and of course, you can do anything with the word provided the topic is the main focus of your entry.

Now as an Aussie, I am all too aware of my very strong accent. Believe me, it never seemed stronger than when I was the only Australian at the first FaithWriters conference back in 2007. My accent hurt my ears. :?

Although, I still remember the girl taking our order at Arby's (I think) and not being able to understand what a certain Amy Sparrow (local resident) was saying, and I (the foreigner with the lazy accent) had to actually translate for her. (Water, Amy. Do you remember? hee hee)

Anyway, the word "accent" is not just about those different ways we pronounce words because of our nationality.

Instead of posting the whole thing (as the definitions are quite long), pop on over to Dictionary.com and see the various definitions:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/accent?s=t

In fact, an accent as far as our national (or regional) speech is concerned, is actually one of the lesser meanings. (Fitting into the distinctive characteristic of anything).

I also want to accent the importance of entering the Challenge.

And, of course, we have an accent in music.

Feel free to encourage one another in this thread.

Love, Deb

Hmm your water story just gave me a great idea./ Thanks Amy for not enunciating and you Deb for teasing Amy. I may actually write a story this week. :thankssign

Oh and my favorite definition was a regularly reoccurring stress. :clown

I was actually needing some help with this word. Thanks for starting this thread Deb. I have a idea that is surfacing in my mind, but I dont want my story top be too obvious. I'm glad you are writing this week Shann.

I noticed on the right side of the page on dictionary.com that it gives the word in different sentences. That helps alot too.

Definitely helpful when they do that. Just being able to put a word into context makes a big difference.

Thanks for letting us use the many different definitions of the word. I was squirreling on one idea that was about someone's accent, but it just wouldn't flesh out for me. I decided on one of the other definitions and like the result much better. I didn't want to get off topic on my first try :thankssign

This may not be the right place to post this, but I'm trying to submit my accent challenge story and I cannot get my MC's thoughts to show up as italicized words. I've tried to copy and paste in several different formats, but I just can't get it to take! Help! Any suggestions? Anyone? I'm running out of time.

You actually have to use a bit of HTML code to make any formatting appear (it won't hold Word formatting).

We have a FAQ here on the boards to help you:
