Bog/Article Writing Contests

Postby Paula22466 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:28 pm

I've noticed the article writing contests have had very few entries, especially the last one with only around 18. These contests are wonderful ways for writers to get exposure and get paid writing assignments. Not to mention, we never know with a paid writing assignment, if the ministry would eventually ask more from us, one open door can lead to more open doors. So, I'm just trying to get some feedback from anyone who might be able to offer some insights as to why such a low number of entries? Thanks!
p.s. I am posting this in the open forum too because I want as many as possible to see it

To be honest, I was going to enter the last one and had a rough draft ready. When I read the other stories, mine couldn't hold a candle to them. In fact, mine was so different, I reread the rules and realized it didn't really fit. I do wonder if others get intimidated by how good the other stories are.

I had thought of asking Mike if it would be possible to keep the stories hidden until the deadline, but then that defeats the purpose of getting God's word out there as much which is really the whole point of the contest.

It is a great opportunity though, that's for sure.

Shann, you make some good points. Although I'm sorry you felt that way about your story, which I am sure was not true. It is almost impossible for any artist, including writers, to be able to judge their own work. I can't tell you how many times I've written something I thought was rubbish but others raved over, and vice-versa. I think the more we write, though, the better we become at being able to determine whether it's really "good" or not - but never with complete certainty. Stephen King, for a time, wrote under an alias for several reasons - one of them being because he wanted to determine if his books were so popular because they were actually good or because of his name. One of those books was the "The Running Man." Can you imagine writing a story like that and not knowing if it were good or not? I do know how you feel, but would encourage you and anyone else who feels this way to not worry about measuring up, because you may never know unless you take the risk.

I don't know how Mike would feel about keeping the articles private until reveal, I can see pros and cons with both. Maybe he will see this thread and weigh in. Thanks for your thoughts :)

I write something every contest, and when I read the others I know mine isn't up to theirs, but I write and post anyway because and I put my heart and soul into it. I think somebody, somewhere might read what I wrote and be helped in someway. I also do it to support Faithwriters, because this site has done so much to help me.

The story I wrote this month may not exactly be what the contest calls for, but I felt compelled to write it anyway.

Keeping the articles private until the contest is over is a good idea though, in the same way the challenge is until judges are done with their winners.

That is definitely something to think about. Although, as an afterthought, I noticed the Christmas blog had quite a few entries in it.

If I hadn't waited to last minute, I probably would have submitted it,but after rereading the rules I realized that I was off target on the topic

Lynn, a truly great reason to enter. :)
Shann, sorry to hear about your illness, hope you are feeling better soon.
