Anyone who enters the challenge is subjecting themselves for feedback from other writers. Granted it's just one person's opinion and many people don't like to leave comments except the nice ones.
I remember dear sweet Geoffry leaving me my first real constructive critique. Above it had been oodles of that's a great story and I love it but he very kindly told me that I started almost every paragraph with my MC's name or a pronoun. I remember rolling my eyes and thinking that probably wasn't entirely true--and I was correct in that assumption because not only did every paragraph begin like that almost every single sentence did! I was so grateful for the time he took to point out that flaw. It's made a huge difference in my writing and has helped so much.
I know some people think if we are going to leave constructive critiques then perhaps we should send it via PM but then I think of all the other writers who read as many stories as possible to get an idea of what is considered strong writing or wants to know what she should avoid to make her piece smoother and I wonder if PM are fair to those people. (I dare say I receive at least one or two PMs thanking me not for the comment on their work but for something on another article--don't get me wrong they are very grateful for my input on their story as well but are also grateful for feedback left on others' stories.
I do spend hours each day reading and commenting and have never written anything in those Gold boxes that didn't come from a place of love. I always start with a few things I like about the story, then in the middle I may give some examples and explain why I had a hard time 'getting it' and then I end on the bigger plus side and often comment the criteria that the judges use. For example: The beginning was strong and build me in and I had to keep reading. Then the next comment might be about how well-written it was or that the twist ending took me by surprise which I love when that happens. At times I feel God nudging me to just keep it simple while on other stories I hear his voice say give them details and examples.
I want people to understand that 99% of the people here leave comments from a place of love. Sorry didn't mean to ramble on but I hope my words help somewhat. God bless you all
