Oh, I forgot to mention a bunch of stuff.

Your analysis of the Smashwords link is spot on. That's essentially what our bookstore would be: A listing of links to member books on Smashwords. The only thing we have to do is figure a way to "disguise" those links so they look like book listings on our side.

Andrew and I talked at length tonight about the possibilities. As I suspected, he shrugged it off as "easy stuff."

Y'see, all the information we need for our listings already exists on the Smashwords site; all we have to do is take what we need: Book title, cover graphic, description, star ratings, available formats... and whatever else. This information is displayed in OUR widget... the information never actually leaves the Smashwords site. The widget knows what information to collect the same way Smashwords does, by using the unique number assigned by them. If the information changes, for example someone's star rating increases, this change would be reflected instantly.

In essence, our bookstore is an empty shell. All we need is a listing template.

We also talked about how much of the system can be automated; he seemed pretty confident most of it could. As you say, it would be nice if all we had to do is enter the Smashwords number into the template and presto, the listing automatically appears.

Seasalt posted the following:

"At WestBow Press, we keep you up to date by developing innovative ways to connect with prospective readers. First, BookStubs gave authors a way to share their titles digitally, and now, the ever-growing popularity of e-books has called for an alternative to traditional book signings.

Our answer: Behind the Story Online Book Signing events that let you and other authors discuss your books, speak to readers and even offer signed copies of your e-books (via BookStubs) to everyone in attendance - all during an hour-long webinar.

We even promote the event to help you discover new fans.

Readers are no longer limited to bookstores, and with Online Book Signings, neither are you.

Be one of the first authors to reach the e-book audience with a Behind the Story event. "

Apparently Westbow charges $1,300.00 for this service. We can "borrow" the idea for nuthin'.

Okay...

I can send everyone who has published an eBook on Faithwriters a private message outlining our plans; we can then judge how much interest there is in this project. Of course only 500 members will be able to read it. Bummer.

I am currently reformatting my two poetry books for publication on Smashwords; once finished, the entire process will be fresh in my mind. I've been waiting for that durned exclusivity agreement with Amazon to run out. Since I restructured the books and edited some of the works since my last Smashwords edition(s), I gotta do the formatting all over again.

Hiya.

Although it kinda bugs me personally, I suppose the best way to handle eBook instruction is to make it a "500 members only" feature. This should also be promoted as a way to increase FW memberships.

Wow.

Andrew already pulled the first page of the FW eBookshop and did some work on the entries. He even sent me a log to explain what was done and why. I was especially impressed with the psychological aspects... but then, he worked for a company that peddled $600.00 guitars so salesmanship was important:

Enhancements to the Product Listings page:

* Title of Book should link to book.
* Picture of Book Cover should link to book.
* Putting the Buy and Learn More buttons below the text wastes valueable real-estate on the page,
often leading to blank space beneath the Book Cover image.
* Putting the buttons on the right side also leads to narrower paragraph, which is preferred by
readers as opposed to scanning from left to far right of the table.
* Linking the title and picture to the book eliminates the need for a Learn More button.
* People are psychologically more willing to click "Add to Cart" rather than Buy, because there is
less of a mental committment. Getting it into their cart is the more important step, because
it will more often lead to a "Checkout" committment once the customer is ready.
* Showing some sort of perceived savings (ie Retail price versus Sale Price) can help conversion.
* "Your Price" makes it seem more personalized to the customer.
* Slight extra white space between title and Description makes it less cluttered.

See ya.

Hi Kenn, I apologize. I was not ignoring you. For some reason I was not getting a message when you posted. Hopefully I will this time.

I don't mind if the buyer clicks on the link says Smashwords on it to get the book in the format they need. We get nothing from the books sold directly on our site. We actually benefit if they need to go to Smashwords for a kindle format or?

When they sign up a book they could tell us right then that they have it on Smashwords, There would be a box like we have discussed where they insert their Smashwords book URL. The FaithWriters affiliate code would attach to it at that point automatically. Then on their book page a link would appear.

Do you need this book in another format? Go HERE

It really is a win win for everyone. The authors get a lot more exposure. The book store has much more appeal so we promote it even more.

With regards to the prepping books for Smashwords. You could try and just put instructions out there but I think you might be in for a landslide of questions and people just not being able to figure it out. I suggest offering a reasonable price to do it. It does take some time and it is very much worth it for an authors exposure. $50 to $100 depending on the size of the book. You can go to Smashwords and find out what their contacts charge for this service and then discount it. Or charge the same. You could offer the price based on an author's financial ability. Or better yet you could set up instructions, Smashwords actually has a free book on how to do this that you could pass on. Then if they had problems or just wanted it done you could step in. I also have another member who has indicated she can prep these too. She needs the work and wants to be involved.
Her name is Laurie Glass. I am sure she will jump into this conversation now.

If you got good at this you could contact Smashwords and offer your contract services.

As far as only 500 members having books here. Anyone can subscribe and put up to 5 books a month on there for I think $5.95. We do need to generate some income so we would use it as a way to get people to sign up for Platinum. The marketing we will do would be well worth it for them.

With regards to your son-in-law's thoughts. If he knows how to implement the changes he has mentioned. Including the box we talked about for the links to Smashword. We would be willing to hire him to do it. If he I good I would have some other things for him too.

Contact me directly about that at writer-support@faithwriters.com

God Bless and thanks for stirring things up here and a few other places I noticed you. We need the stirring. Working as a team, body of Christ, is the best way to get things done.

Hiya, Mike.

Oh, I didn't think you were ignoring me. Faithwriters consists of much more than just these forums - I figured you were busy chasing ducks into appropriate rows.

I'm planning to sit down and write you a letter outlining my ideas more completely. These forums have been great for kicking things around, but it's probably time to put the puzzle together and take a look at the whole picture.

Yes, I figured Faithwriters could use a little bump in funding; unfortunately, nothing is free. I'll discuss this aspect further in my letter.

I agree - just setting up shop helping people format their books would be overwhelming... and I do not have the stamina I used to. Fortunately Smashwords offers a comprehensive formatting guide on their site for free (which we would, of course, carry in our shop). I would also write easy-to-follow instructions for preparing manuscripts. If our authors still have questions, I would be happy to make myself available. I'd also be happy and privileged to include Laurie somehow - she certainly seems to know what she's talking about.

As for Andrew, he's MORE than capable of making these changes - he's already done it. He copied the eBookstore page and began implementing the aforementioned changes; it looks great. He told me today he's already started work on a database using ISBNs as unique identifiers for our books (Smashwords assigns an ISBN to every book they publish). This makes it easy to find and pull the information for our members' books from the mass of eBooks on the Smashword site. Believe me, I don't think there's anything Faithwriters can throw at him that he can't handle.

Okay, lessee... it's 7:48 am. Bedtime!

Bedtime? This is gonna be fun. I will wait to hear from you.

I have another project immediately in mind for Andrew.
You know how the system automatically adds the 500 logo to Platinum members. I want to do the same thing for Gold with their own logo.

OK, I am in this to make it work. Has anyone heard of-have any information about togather.com. It seems they are creating the platform I originally wrote about. For me, I want to sell and shop on a site that I/purchasers like me, don't have to screen the contents. I want something that has standards and is Christian content. I don't use Smashwords, Amazon etc because I have to wade through and accept when I get a less acceptable book-even if I just spent a small amount on it, my time is worth something and my mind doesn't need to be digesting junk. The exercise has made me a lot more discerning but it has also taken me on "rabbit trails". This is just not something I want to do at my age. It is time to maximize my efforts to the best of my possibilities.

Ok nuff said. What can I do to help? (that is within my capabilities at least)

I want to use my FW ebook in a promotion to bookstores. Can somebody tell me what the link will be so they can go directly to the sales area of FW ebooks and buy the ebook? Thanks,

Hiya, Salty.

I love your enthusiasm. God bless ya!

Unfortunately, the eBookshop is still in development so we have no idea what the final URL will be.

Andrew and I have been working diligently to complete the shop. I am still in awe of Andrew; the things he can do off the top of his head are amazing. Today he showed me the database he wrote which will keep track of each book statistic by using its ISBN. He found a bookshop template to "tweak" and it's very impressive.

I've been busy with graphic design and formatting my two Amazon.com books for Smashwords. I had some specific formatting problems to solve on three of my poems since most eBooks want everything displayed with a straight left margin. The trickiest was my poem, "Barefoot on the Moon"...

When Turbobikes and Vaprocars
Climb aeroways up to the stars,
    And Visiscreens convulse and flex
      With music from The PortaPlex,
I love to flee the crowded night
          Aboard a discount lunar flight
And fly to where my dreams await—
              Please join me there...
                It's not too late.

The journey spans both day and night
As we explore the dark and light
Amid the stillness born of space
      Where godly whispers still embrace
The dreams of those who seek rebirth
Beyond the confines of the earth—
And by His love our souls commune
              While dancing barefoot
                On the moon.

Set free from all opposing force,
Our hearts will soar without remorse
And flit about like toy balloons
As we traverse the dusty dunes
        Where ancient lovers often gazed...
And yet, the moon remains unphased
By our desire to seek repose
              With lunar sand
                Between our toes.

Through seas and craters we shall roam
  Beneath the moon's protective dome
Until we hear the final call
      For our departure; spirits fall
To realize our trip must end—
Back to the earth we both descend,
Returned to life one day too soon
              From dancing barefoot
                On the moon.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on our progress here on the forum.

Thanks, Lillian.

You can see how the special formatting adds to the "experience" of the poem; however, if tabs/spaces were used to achieve this format, they would be ignored by some eReaders and left justify the whole thing. I had to figure a way to maintain the format no matter what eReader was being used.

The solution was one I used to use when building websites. I created a series of invisible boxes which incrementally increase in size. These are inserted as needed at the beginning of each line. Since eReaders have no problem displaying graphics, the lines are "pushed" into place.

Gee...

I uploaded the new version of my books on Smashwords a day or so ago but refrained from submitting it for Premium Catalog approval until I had a chance to update the cover. I just visited my listing and discovered it had already been submitted and approved. See how easy it is?

Now... I'd better get busy on that cover!
