Tips for starting a small church writing group

Post by jjanoski »

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've been on these message boards, but God always brings me back to my passion of writing for him.

I am strongly considering starting a small group at my church for those who like to write or who might be interested in pursuing writing. I want the group to be casual and accessible to anyone, but I would also like it to become a forum for those who would like to use their writing to further the Kingdom of God.

I am curious as to who out there has started a group like this at their church and what their experiences were/are. Any suggested formats that I should use to promote and facilitate the group? Any suggestions of things to do/not to do?

I'm just seeking out general advice and experiewnces since this is something totally new to me and totally out of my comfort zone, but I really have a heart to see this get off the ground at my church and in my community.

Thank you all for your responses!

Josh

I am thinking of doing this too,but don't know where to start. Did you get any response at all to your question?

To start a writers group, you will want to define a few things:

Is the group for Christian Writers only or open to any writer?
How many writers do you want to have in the group?
When and where will you meet?
Will writers submit their writing in advance (so you can critique at home and then discuss) or read at meetings?

To find other writers interested in participating:
Post in church bulletin.
Make flyers and leave at church, in Christian bookstores, etc.
Post your new group here.
Once you get going, you can build a website and that will draw some writers.

Or...you could always join an existing group if you find one that meets your needs. If you would like to start a group with the support of the Inspire Christian Writers, we'd be glad to help. Just email me: [email protected]
Gratefully,
