I'm less inclined to think of the second one as man vs. society, mainly because only one of the suspects is a criminal, and the detective's conflict is deciding who that person is. I'm going to mull over this one a little more though. I don't want to miss a subtlety.[/color]

I think you're right. I was too lazy last night to re-read your post with definitions and examples and I just remember that you'd mentioned something about criminals so I posted this one. But I agree, it doesn't fit. Sorry!

Two powerful pieces...the second was particularly so. The man vs. society conflict is clear in both, and I particularly loved how you brought it out not just through the social/historical context, but also through the inner conflict of the main characters. Thank you so much for sharing these.

"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a novella by American author Herman Melville.

I first read this in high school and it is, I think, a good example of man vs society. It is a story of wall street and first appeared in 1853.

It is a short essay that provides an insight into Bartleby who is against society.

Barleby is a copyist, who is different from all the other employees--he is uncommunicative and repetitive. As one reads the story, one can see that he is unable to exist in the world before him...

Oooh, I remember Bartleby!

When I read it in high school, I was just so frustrated with Bartleby, and his constant "I would prefer not to."

Then I thought I'd try it out on my mom. "Jan, clean your room!" "I would prefer not to." She definitely didn't appreciate my being literary.

Thanks for the memory, Toni, and for stopping by the class. By the way, this particular class is one that was lost in the 'meltdown', and you missed the initial post, I think. A shame, because this one was "guest-written" by the very excellent Havah, while I was recuperating from surgery.

Thank you for such kind words on Bartleby! I, too, tried those words on my Dad and he thought it was cute but disarming...It didn't get me out of work but brought about a chuckle...
