Limericks are hard... or maybe I'm just focusing all my creativity on my November novel (yes, I know that's not an original excuse! :)).

Anyway, here's my attempt, dedicated to our east-side-of-the-Metroplex neighbors who like to live WAY north of the city center... despite the horrible traffic:

There was a young woman named Alice
Who worked in a city called Dallas.
She rose each day at five
And braved two-hour drives
To live in a Plano McPalace.

Carol S.
Carol, this is cute! Love the kick in the last two words.

I shudder at the thought of a 2-hour drive!

Chrissy, this is an adorable quatrain, with sentiments we all share!

It's pretty close to being a limerick, too--just missing that last line. I'll bet you just ran out of time...how about this?

If only I had some more time
I know I'd write so much more rhyme
If I had the solution
A New Year's resolution
My poems would all be sublime.

I'm just stopping by for my early morning limericksercise.

There was an ol'timer from Maine,
Who fished in the sun and the rain;
Don't touch his lobstah
You thievin' mobstah,
Or your backside'll be feeling some pain.

Shelley, I LOVE those photos!

The details in the feathers and ....neck skin (?) are exquisite...
(I hope my neck doesn't get that wrinkly. It already wobbles!)

A girl sat atop her piano
Composing a novel for NaNo
When she paused to write limericks
The words seemed like gimmericks
Which foiled her great master plan-o

I confess, I am not sitting atop my piano, and my great master plan is really only to make Jan crack a smile.

Did I succeed?

I'm so excited... I actually thought of one with a pun!

The poet whose name is Walt Whitman
Is loved by American lit fans.
His poetry drones
With serious tones...
He just isn't much of a wit man!

Yvonne, this is chahming, and reminds me to ask you something I've always wondahed. How do elementary teachahs in Maine teach the "R" sound?

It has it's funny moments.

I actually had a boy write "My sista works at the ice cream pala."
They also add "r's" on words that end with an "uh" sound.
(Anner, Lydier, bananer, etc.)

Teaching phonics is fun!

As in most places, the dialects are weakening in the younger generations. It's the older folks who still speak with thick accents.

I don't have an accent, do I? :D

No, Vonnie, I didn't notice one. but I have another friend from Maine whose accent is unmistakably Maine-ish.

A little background on this limerick: After 2 days of watching my husband stare at the bookshelves, I decided he wasn't trying to pick out a book. It seems Stephen King's new novel is over 1,000 pages and he was worrying about where we were going to put it, and that we would have to totally rearrange the book arrangement just to fit it in.

My husband today is quite frantic
His problem, turns out, is pedantic
Stephen King wrote a tome
But he can’t bring it home
There’s no room on our shelf – it’s gigantic.

I was trying to use hard-to-rhyme words. Brad isn't sure "pedantic" is right, but I told him I was using it to mean "nit-picking."

He also just told me that the book doesn't even come out until the 24th. Talk about pedantic worry!

Each of your lessons reinforces my total lack of poetic talent. I don't like writing poetry, but I'm determined to do it because it's so good for me to have to follow rules and play with words.

There once was a mean little kitty
Whose hunger was not very pretty
For food she would beg
By biting my leg
Did I feed her? Not one itty bitty

My cat bit me while I was trying to come up with a limerick. Maybe I should let her inspire all my writing.

Phee, this one is AWESOME! You know you can always get me with a kitty poem--and this one is also flawless in rhyme, meter, and limericky-ness!
