Hello.

Curious to learn how Highest Rankings are determined. Is this based on number of times an article is read? If not, by what criteria is used?

Thanks!

Hi Jim.

No, the number of reads has nothing to do with how well an entry does in the Challenge. We don't even look at that. The Challenge is usually finalized well before many people have started reading entries for the week.

We have judges on duty who are reading entries as soon as they are submitted. (They read them in a behind-the-scenes judges' only area.) The read and rate every entry in a number of specific areas. You can find out more about that here:

http://www.faithwriters.com/Boards/phpB ... 54&t=31273

Each entry is rated on its own merits (not in comparison to other entries) in each of those categories.

The judges' ratings are sent through to me a day or two after entries close (once they have finished all their reading and rating). Each judge's ratings are added together for each entry, and then divided by the number of rating categories, to give us the one average score for that entry.

The judges' combined average ratings are then added together to give one final, combined average score for each entry. (VERY thankful for Excel sheets. I used to do it all on a calculator years ago, when we were getting upward of 100 entries a week! Time consuming, much! Now Excel does the hard work for me.)

All the entries are then sorted from highest combined rating to lowest. The highest ratings for each level win the level awards. The highest ten ratings, regardless of level, win the Editors' Choice.

The highest rankings use the same information, and are simply a way of showing which entries came close to the top in their level and overall.

Hope that helps. I hold off posting the Highest Ranking list until later in the day (or a day or so later, at times, if I'm busy), to allow the winners a chance to enjoy their moment in the spotlight. :D

Love, Deb
