Thinking of entering my NaNo novel... couple of question. If I have a half-page prologue, can I submit both that and the first chapter?

Also, am I allowed to submit the story to the contest and then send it to an agent before waiting for the results of the contest?

Yes to both questions, Amy. I think we say in the Terms and Conditions that if you have a prologue or introduction, that can be included as well as the first chapter.

And absolutely to the second question. Don't hang around for a year waiting for the results to come in. If your manuscript is ready to be submitted to an agent, go for it. It won't make a difference if your book is picked up after you've entered it. It just can't be in print before you enter.

After all the hard work of NaNo, this is really a great way to take it one more step.

Hi Nichole.

This year we are giving free conference registration to the three winners, but that doesn't mean you have to attend. We would love the winners to be there so we can present their plaques to them in a public arena, but if the winner can't make it, the plaque will be sent out by post later.

If you haven't already had a read through the terms and conditions, that will help explain things.

thank you Amy for asking that- I was just debating that w/ my husband last night-- whether to wait so long before submitting it to an agent (have to find an agent first, scratch that need to finish edits first)-- my book might not be ready until October anyway but it's good to know this in case it is.

OK, here's a perhaps silly question. My novel has pretty short chapters, so I'm trying to decide how much to plan on entering. The rules say if it's under 4 pages then you can submit two chapters--is that four pages with the lines double-spaced? Standard for submission anywhere is double-spaced, so I'd guess so, but wanted to check.

Also randomly curious how many people total entered the last two year's competitions.

Hi Amy.

Even double spaced, I wouldn't suggest submitting more than two chapters.

As for numbers, I know I gave the total for the fiction and non-fiction in another thread. I'll log on to my office computer and check the files in a minute (and get back to you).

Okay ... for the non-fiction Page Turner last year there were 39 entries. For the fiction Page Turner in 2009, there were 44 entries.

I'm considering re-submitting the same novel that I submitted two years ago.

I've revised it and polished it, and I'm anxious to see if it's better.

Is this okay? or would you rather I submit another one?

Oh, boy... now that leaves me with a dilemma. I have both done a lot of revision / polishing on the ms. I entered in '09 AND have a new one.

Decisions, decisions...

Oh! --Would my runner up placement for '09 make that ms. ineligible? (I haven't re-read the rules lately, but of course will do so before entering.) If so, that would make my decision for me!

Actually, Shelley, yes, it probably wouldn't be fair to put a Page Turner runner up back in. Nothing in the rules, but it may be best to go with something new in that case.
