I'm trying to imagine Deb....

Postby lish1936 » Sun Mar 23, 2014 10:19 am

The sad and tragic story of the missing plane that's dominating the news has given me a window into Australia's weather, and once again their accent. I'm trying to imagine Deb talking with that accent.

But I love it! Years ago, I had a crush on my gastroenterologist, simply because of his Australian accent. :love2

I love to write. Nothing escapes the crush I have on the written word. I'm hooked on words!!

Praying for that plane...
God Bless the beasts and the children
Give them shelter from the storms.
Children are our tomorrow
Keep them daily from the sorrow
Of the beasts in life

Yes, Lynn, I am, too. And let's not forget all the families that are suffering for lack of information. So sad...

Joanne, I didn't realize Cori was from "Awstrailya," or is that an English accent? :D

Cori isn't from Australia, but she has a very unique accent. (I hope I get all the details right...lol) She was born in England, raised in South Africa, lived in Detroit, MI for awhile, and now in Texas.

Last night they said they were going to use underwater drones to detect the ping from the black boxes. They don't have much time left before the batteries run down.

Joanne, I like your new picture!

Shed a few tears this morning at the news. I guess I was holding on to hope that some of these precious souls were still alive. I think this has impacted me most over the last two and half weeks because one of the Australian couples on the plane was sort of a mirror image of Steve and me. The wife was my age exactly (53), the children had all left home, and they wanted to explore the world.

So very tragic.

As for my accent, Lillian, it is very Australian, which means quite lazy. And Jo got Cori's lineage right. She has a wonderful accent. Some people said we sounded the same, but Cori and I just look at each other and laugh (while shaking our heads). Cori has a very proper accent. Mine is just lazy.

I just remembered a handful of audio messages I shared on my old website (untouched for years). So if you would like to hear my accent, you can hear it here:

http://www.breathfreshair.org/AudioMessage.html

You can either play it on Windows Media or click the download link (and it will play direct).

 Oh M'gosh, Deb! Your voice and accent sound more like ... Queen Elizabeth or the late Princess Diane...more British than Australian, with the exception of a few a's and i's. I don't want to get too personal, but do you sing in a choir? :music2 Your voice sounds quite lyrical. :D

Blessings,

Awww Lillian. I think you must have been listening through rose coloured ear muffs.  But that is very sweet of you to say.

And not in a choir, but I'm the music leader at church (and worship leader). Been singing all my life.

I KNEW it! My "rose colored ear muffs" are very perceptive. Although, I prefer to call them earphones. I usually hear better through earphones than ear muffs.

It always feels one thousand times heavier when I'm in the US, particularly the first time I went over on my own. When you have another Aussie with you (like Kylie or Steve), you don't feel it quite so much. But when you are on your own, it's very strong in your own ears.

Then you arrive back at Los Angeles airport, check in and wait for your plane back home. Suddenly all the Aussie voices start mingling around you and your accent settles back into normal mode.

We had a wonderful lady in our church when I was a teenager (back when the dinosaurs roamed) that was from New Zealand. People often thought she was Aussie because of her accent, which she found bizarre since the two accents are different.

Back then, when I regularly heard both, I could easily tell the difference. These days, I'm not sure I could.
