One of the resident cats over at Isaiah House , an orange tabby named Nicholas, has had a cherry-sized cyst on the right side of his head. We had been concerned about it for at least a year or more.

Nicholas likes to come over to the house to be petted, so finally yesterday afternoon I got a paper towel and a pin, got ahold of him and jabbed the pin into the cyst to drain it. At first, some clear yellow serum came out, but as I squeezed, it became evident that there was a solid mass inside. So after several more jabs with the pin, I finally was able to squeeze out quite a bit of thick white sebaceous material. Finally, I was able to pull the sac itself out. I put some triple antibiotic salve on it, and Nick (I sometimes call him Nick-A-Doo) is very happy. I put more salve on it this morning, and Nick is a little leery of my touching it, but I plan on putting the salve on until it heals up completely. Nick was pretty good despite some struggling, and I gave him a handful of kitty treats afterward.
I put the sebaceous material and the cyst sac in a tiny jar filled with some witch hazel I had, and my roommates C.J. and Diane are going to show it to Leigha next door (Leigha and her husband Dwight run Isaiah House). Wonder if Leigha will get grossed out?

C.J. and Diane said they decided that it's too risky to show off the stuff I got out of Nick's cyst, as Leigha might get upset that we'd done something to her cat. I'm still putting antibiotic salve on it morning and evening, and it's slowly shrinking. I squeeze a little fluid out of it, but other than that it's doing okay.

We've been having a problem with our rent. Apparently our landlady hasn't gotten it yet (for July), and I've learned that we have to pay a $15 fee, get and fill out a claim form, and send it and the fee and a photocopy of the money order stub to find out what happened to our money orders. Isaiah House says they did send them out along with their share of our rent and washer/dryer fee, and Vera, our landlady says she's checked and she doesn't have them. And it will take 30 days for the money order company to find out if they've been cashed and by who. We've been talking to Vera, she understands, she gets it, but she just wants to know where our July rent is, that's all.

I don't know about everyone else, but I for one can't afford to pay two months' rent to make up for it. But in this morning's meeting we were told that Isaiah House will cover it, if it turns out our money orders were stolen and cashed. But we still need to find a way to get our rent to Vera in a safer way. It was suggested we take all the money and send it out in one money order, but some of us aren't keen on that idea. Besides, money orders can't be made out for more than a certain amount. I wonder if sending it registered mail would work....

Hi all

Dee Jay how old is Nick I've had both a cat and a dog that had just what you described and it was cancer. Just a thought. I hope you're right about it just being a fatty cyst but it might be worth it to get the stuff tested.

Not sure how old Nick is. Like I said, I drained a lot of sebaceous matter--think major zit--from it, and it's shrinking. He's likely less than 10 years old. I'd have to ask.
