Bill is on a mission trip to South Dakota. So I'm at the lake with a couple girl friends. Probably the closest I'll get to a vacation. Fun to talk girl stuff, just being lazy!

Praying for peace in Israel. Oh, how God loves Israel, the land and the people.

So happy with you, Carole , about the baby's improvement.

Edy, I was at Indiana Wesleyan University (1956-58--then Marion College) with a fellow named Bardsley. I wonder if there is any connection. I think his first name was Harold. One of the most godly women I have ever known was Gypsie Miller from North Carolina. She was known widely in Wesleyan circles for her leadership in Women's Missionary Society. She was my dear prayer partner for many years. She wrote a book that was published when she was 100, I think--just before or after she died. It is so deep spiritually, it is difficult for me to comprehend. Her husband died, Dewey Miller, died years before her. He had the most marvelous memory for Scripture of any preacher I've ever known--quoting chapter after chapter in his sermons. What a blessing they both were to me.

It's extraordinarily humid here today, but I understand cooler weather is on its way. Love to all!

Howdy, dear ones!
Howard told me, after my appointment at the women's clinic, today, that he's no longer
scared. Poor sweetie. I knew he was concerned, but I guess I didn't realize to what extent.
Thanks for keeping him in prayer, too - I sure appreciate each one of you!

It's quite hilarious how prophetic Pr. Jean's thoughts in prayer for me have turned out. She
alluded to the Great Shepherd going ahead of His sheep to prepare the way. Not only is the
specialist, that my niece Angie recommended from her residency experience with her, still at the clinic, I have a followup appointment with her tomorrow...because another patient CANCELLED her own appointment just today!

Appearances from the ultrasound suggest my situation is part of rather routine set of conditions for us vintage females. So, hopefully this will be something I can cross off my "bucket list" in the very near future, Lord willing.

Wherever did that term "bucket list" originate, anyway? I suspect I lived my life's "dreams list," already, except for a yet unfulfilled trip to Israel and a trip back to Hong Kong (the most enchanting place I never dreamed I would get to experience that lived up to every expectation and beyond).

Things you want to do before you "kick the bucket." It's okay. I didn't know until a year ago or so.

I posted this in the "prayer request" board, but thought I'd post it here, too.

Well, it's about time for my annual prayer request. :) Every summer I help with the community children's musical at my church. We have 52 kids involved this year! Each year with have at least one "glitch." This year, one of our main members of the tech/lighting/sound crew was stranded in Newark and Chicago, after a church sponsored missions trip he was on.

The team was supposed to return Monday night, July 14th. Monday, their flight from Newark, New Jersey to St. Louis was cancelled. The next plan was to fly Newark to Chicago to St. Louis on Tuesday the 15th. Their flight out of Newark was delayed, and they missed their connecting flight in Chicago. The next plan was to separate and take three different flights from Chicago to St. Louis, supposed to arrive between 6 PM to 11 PM Wednesday the 16th. The first flight was cancelled, second delayed. They finally decided not to wait around any more, and rented 3 vans to drive 5 to 6 hours from Chicago to St. Louis. They finally arrived about 1:30 AM Thursday the 17th. Our tech guy was one of the van drivers, so while he was at practice that Thursday, he was in no condition to actually figure out the tech stuff, as this was his first time seeing it. So we had to add an extra practice at the last minute.

They perform Friday (tomorrow) morning for "Summer Fun Days" (my church's version of VBS -- a different day each week for five weeks), Friday evening, and Saturday afternoon.

Please pray that everything would come together in time. I know it will work out, but we would appreciate any and all prayers! Especially pray for the hearts of the kids, that they would remember the truths in the musical, and for those who come to see it who are not Christians.

I'd also love prayers for the health and safety of all involved, but especially for the main actors/actresses. We like to live on the edge and do this without understudies.

So I will not be around much, if at all, starting tonight until Saturday or Sunday. I DO lurk around here even if I don't post. :)

(Sorry. That was long. And you probably didn't need all the background about the tech crew guy and flight delays. But oh well. ;) )

All of my life I enjoyed watching films/movies of the old wild West. You know...the "shoot 'em up", "cowboys 'n Indians", "outlaws", "cattle rustlin'", "horse stealin'", "bar brawlin'", "bank robbin'" kind of stuff. I watched one such movie yesterday afternoon.

In the old West days, those caught killing, horse stealing, or cattle rustling were punished by hangin'. There was always lots of that going on. However, one thing was always confusing to me.

Every time a hanging was scheduled (usually the next day at dawn), the men in the town would always be shown in the town-square busily sawing wood and pounding nails as they built the new gallows framework.

With all the hangings being done back then, why did they need to build a new gallows framework each time there was a hanging? They would have saved a lot of time and work by using the old one.

Inquiring minds want to know....

Don, my guess is that they didn't want the gallows "hanging around" (no pun intended) to remind them of the lawlessness of the area. Or it may be that the jail had an agreement with the local lumber store to buy new lumber for every hangin' to keep the lumberman quiet about the hanky-panky going on in the jail. Of course, that's only a guess. :-) :cop

Don, I share your enthusiasm for western movies. I have a collection of about 200 westerns which I've played over and over. My husband, sons and grandsons (none of whom care a fig about westerns) think it's the funniest thing to see the matriarch of this home happily ensconsed
in her bedroom recliner munching on popcorn or sliced apples lathered with peanut butter. :superhappy All this and heaven, too.

Allison, you are one busy little bee and I'll pray you're given strength to do all that you do.

Edy, I hope to hear an "all clear" any day now from your little engine that could. I think Howard must be one wonderful, loving, supportive, understanding man (and that's just for starters!)

Verna, I've heard that Charlotte is the hottest city in the state. Is that so? We have ocean breezes to cool us down but you don't even have that. Even so, Charlotte is one city I could have lived happily in all my married life, as long as I could have belonged to your church and lived next door to you! :clap :bow :superhappy :superhappy

Happy Lord's Day everyone! I love you all.

Don, you have one busy, busy inquiring mind!

Prayers for you, Allison, for all you need to get done.

Edy, so thankful for the way God is "going ahead of you," and I like your word, "vintage"!

My very dear Mariane, I would love to have you as neighbor, and I love my church and many other things about Charlotte, except for the traffic. Fortunately we live close to the places we like to go, and we can even walk to a shopping center with grocery, drugstore, restaurants, etc. It is just over the hill and a little road behind us, but our huge juniper bushes on the hill and Leland Cypress at the top, fronting a woods area, make a wonderful privacy screen. I do remember warmer summers, but the weatherman has predicted 97 degrees today. That's hot for us! It's supposed to dive back into the 80's about Tuesday and linger there.

A blessed Sunday is wished for all.

Well, It went really well. Saturday was the final performance. These 52 kids were rock stars, though. Even though they sped thought the songs at the end like a speeding bullet for the first performance on Friday, these kids were awesome. Friday morning,in the second song, there was some weird technical glitch were the opening sequence underscore was playing over/with the actual song. But man, they stuck with it, watched the director (I assume, as I was back stage) and made it through without having to restart the song. Friday evening went much better, and the one Saturday afternoon was the best of them all. I'm so proud of those kids!

I'm glad it's over, but at the same time, I'll really miss working with those kids. I love it!

From my deck I have a perfect view of my beach. I saw the craziest thing out there today. There were four ducks standing on the sand - a mama hen and her three almost-grown babies.

I believe mama was doing a "show and tell" demonstration of "Basic Flight 101" for her kids. Facing the kids, she stood there flapping her wings for about 15 seconds while they watched.

Then, the kids flapped their wings, but one of them gave up after a few seconds. The other two flapped their wings for at least 20 seconds - so hard and fast their wings looked like a blur of fan blades churning at high speed.

Those two had their necks stretched upward toward the sky trying very hard to become airborne. It almost looked like they were standing on the tips of their webbed feet to gain height. Of course, their wing feathers had not yet developed enough to achieve lift-off.

With that, the lesson was over, but will probably be repeated tomorrow, and the next day, the next day, and the next, until they pass the course. Eventually they all will soar in the air.

I know I have not been active on here lately, but I didn't realize it had been since February that I last logged on. I see you have all carried on just fine without me. I did not and will not be going back to read all the posts since February.

I have been busy taking a class called Perspectives On the World Christian Movement. Jan Ross recommended it to me. It started April 4 and ends next week. I have about 20-25 pages left to read for the assignments, one quiz on this week's reading, some discussion posts to make (3 minimum) and a paper on an unreached people group to finish. That is where most of my time has gone. That plus working 7 days a week between the two jobs.

I am about to quit the weekend job at the gas station, though. This last week I went to the doctor because I was tired of my feet being so sore after working the weekend. I thought I probably had Plantar Fasciitis, but X-rays suggest more. I have bone spurs on both heels and degeneration in the midfoot and the joint of the right big toe. The radiologist also listed Plantar Fascial Fibromatosis which means benign tumors on the plantar fascia. But the article I found online explaining that said they cannot be diagnosed by X-rays alone. But it does better explain the type of pain that I have than does Plantar Fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia. So, I go to the podiatrist tomorrow morning.

Welcome back to the porch, Joanney!

It's been said that "when your feet hurt - everything hurts." I believe there is much truth in that statement.

As you will see, many of the regular porch-sitters have bailed-out to spend time elsewhere. The porch often resembles a ghost town. Other than infrequent visits by two or three of us, it's not the same as it once was with the fun, caring, sharing atmosphere and fresh-baked goodies shared daily. Even 'Old Blue' has abandoned ship for something else.

Tell us more about your class, and what you intend to do with it after finishing. By the way, I know Jan Ross, and believe her "Heart of God International Ministries" is a good one for sharing the saving gospel with the lost.

Hi Joanney-

Nice to see you again! I pray for you often and love your updates on Facebook about your boys, your jobs, etc. Are you still involved with the same church? How you pack so much into 24 hours leaves me breathless. God bless your sweet self and your boys! I haven't seen any of Simon's poetry lately. Is he still writing?

I want to ask all of you a question, and please feel free in your response:

I came across this link while surfing the net. What a surprise! However, I wish they had been more careful about attribution. I wonder if I should call their attention to the fact that I wrote it or just be glad it was published.

I think you would be perfectly within your rights to ask for proper attribution. But then give them something back. Give them the link to your FW profile page, and suggest that if they enjoy short stories like that, they they could look at the FW site, but urge them to properly attribute anything they use from there.

I agree with Allison, but I'm afraid I am a bit more hot under the collar that anyone would post someone else's work, especially our precious Mariane's, and not even hint it isn't their own composition. If they found it elsewhere, without attribution, at least they could have indicated "Author Unknown."

Here's what I sent in reply to BeachGrandma's email, for your comments/corrections where I am in the dark:

Dear Mariane,

I would definitely let them know. If possible, I would send them the same story published elsewhere with your name/photo/etc., to verify you as the author. Then I would sweetly (as I know you do) inform them that for honesty's sake, they should include the author's name (or "Unknown" if they found it somewhere else without your name) so it doesn't appear that the poster is the author.

If you "let it go" it gets into the public domain, I think, and then you could have copyright problems (not sure, but worth checking). I think this site is derelict if they are posting other people's creative writing without attribution. Perhaps they should even be reported, but I don't know to whom!

Joanney, I understand. I haven't stopped by in a little less than a couple of weeks, and there are too many posts to respond to. Anyway, hi and wonderful to see you here!

West Texas still remains hot and fairly dry, although we are a little better off than the the last three years. We do have a chance for rain the next several days. Please pray that we get it.

I agree that Mariane should definitely let the person posting her work know it is NOT okay. I answered her post on Facebook about it. It is shocking, to say the least, that someone would do this.

Do any of you have some really good, husband pleasing recipes (as in MUST contain meat) that don't require cooking or heating up the kitchen? Although our central air works great, I just don't enjoy cooking much when it is this hot. We do use the grill occasionally, but it's really too hot to be outside. We also eat out some, but that gets old. Any and all suggestions appreciated!
