Last evening I attended a concert by the Gaither Vocal Band in my church. A couple of other Homecoming performers were with them. It was said about 3,000 people were there to hear them.

In my opinion, the Vocal Band has slipped a lot from what they were in times past. Oh, they were good, but not like they used to be. There has recently been a lot of turn-over in the group. There were two new-comers in the group last night.

Even Bill Gaither is showing his age and is slowing down. Their extensive road tours each year certainly would take a toll on a person and their family relationships.

Today, there are other Southern Gospel Quartet groups that I find more enjoyable than the Gaither Vocal Band.

From my inbox, this morning...perhaps some of you might have seen this already, but it deserves repeating:

Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday."I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"

When you are DOWN to nothing..... God is UP to something!
Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

If you want a dish that can be eaten for any meal, here's my favorite--Scrambled Eggs and Potatoes.

I use two potatoes and two eggs, but if your appetite is smaller than mine, it's okay to use one of each. First, peel, slice and boil the potatoes until soft; drain. Put your choice of fat in a frying pan, then put the drained, boiled potatoes into the pan and fry until brown. Crack eggs over potatoes, and scramble through the potatoes. When the eggs are done, slide onto a plate, add salt and pepper to taste, and if you're like me, add ketchup. DELICOUS!

That sounds easy and good!

When I fry red potatoes, I don't always peel them before thin slicing. Then, I partially pre-cook the slices in the microwave for a minute or so before frying them. That way they will almost be cooked through before browning them in the pan - fried with butter, of course.

I pepper them during frying, and sometimes will add some dried onion chips to kick up the flavor a bit. I've also been known to add some finely chopped red peppers, too.

Next time I'll scramble eggs with the potatoes as you mentioned.

Note: Sometimes when I scramble eggs I'll toss in some crumbled-up crisp bacon.

You can also use canned potatoes--just slice, fry and add the eggs. I've even used instant mashed potatoes--make one serving according to package directions, fry to make a patty/potato pancake, scramble eggs through.
But adding onions, bacon and peppers sounds fantastic, too.

Edy, that's a good post about reasons for not going to church.

Don, I think Gaither should have quit while he was ahead. Most of his DVDs are repeats now ,sometimes 3rd and 4th generation repeats. He's made millions upon millions from the
Homecoming series and from his concerts. I have wondered, too, about the advisability of
members going on so many tours with Gaither, away from their families for long stretches at
at a time. Wives can't be happy about this and it doesn't necessarily strengthen marriages
either. I'm sorry you were disappointed in the Vocal Band, Don. Who are the two regulars
who were with Gaither? Mark Lowery and Guy?

I think I'll fix that potatoes and egg dish for John. He likes anything you can pour catsup
over.

Here's something I found interesting:

A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment. Then a new school year began.

The very next afternoon three young boys, full of youthful, after-school enthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trash can they encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action.

The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the young percussionists as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. In fact, I used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favor? I'll give you each a dollar if you'll promise to come around every day and do your thing."

The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old-timer greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "This recession's really putting a big dent in my income," he told them. "From now on, I'll only be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans." The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they did accept his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus. A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street.

"Look," he said, "I haven't received my Social Security check yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy quarter?" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time, beating these cans around for a quarter, you're nuts! No way, mister. We quit!"

And the old man enjoyed peace.
"O Jesus, Jesus, dearest Lord, forgive me if I say
For very love, thy sacred name, a thousand times a day.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide; I rest in Thee whate'er betide.
Thy gracious smile is my reward. I love, I love Thee, Lord.

The old timers Guy Penrod and Mark Lowry are long gone. Their replacements have left too.

The two newest regular members are David Phelps and Wes Hampton. The two new-comers are Adam Crabb and Todd Suttles. Phelps and Hampton are good, but Crabb and Suttles won't make it for long - in my opinion.

I'm getting hungry reading these posts! I sometimes make migas, which are scrambled eggs with crispy tortilla strips stirred in. First you cut corn tortillas into thin strips and fry lightly until crisp and golden. Then scramble the eggs with cheese, bacon crumbles, and either green chilis or jalapenos. The tortilla strips are stirred in during the last minute or so of cooking so they stay crisp. It's really yummy Latino comfort food.

So, no one told me what the weather is like now where you live. Is it spring yet? I have several perennials blooming in my front flower bed and some hostas coming up that I had forgotten about planting. They were a nice surprise, though.

Don, I used to enjoy watching the Gaither specials on TV, but I haven't seen them in a good while. Sorry to hear they are not what you expected. I do think sometimes artists just go on too long. A completely different type of music all together, but look at the Rolling Stones. It is time for them to QUIT. A newspaper article that covered a concert on their tour called them the Strolling Bones.

And on that note, I'll leave you in peace. Y'all behave.
I'm Bound for the Promised Land

We had a beautiful day, today, Betty. Our "dirty laundry" snow is receding, we can actually see patches of last year's grass along the mostly dry sidewalks. The 6 o'clock weatherman said we reached 59 degrees (60 was forecast); later he said a squirrel cuddled up to the official thermometer, raising the 59 to 60! :P

But, I see blizzard warnings are out to the west of us, from Bismarck in western North Dakota past Fergus Falls in western MN. Winter storm warnings surround the blizzard area.

But, we know it won't last long, and the high piles of snow are mostly shrunk so any shoveling will be a lot easier. :thumbs

The way things are goin', I'm startin' to think the "Great July 4th Blizzard" might happen in Minnesota this year.

By that I don't mean just seeing a few snow flakes falling. I'm talkin' about a blinding, wind-blown, white-out blizzard of hip-deep snow that would send snow plows back to the barn.

Enjoy your July 4th holiday this year - at home!

We've been having spring weather here in SoCal for some time--in fact, there was a stretch of summer weather this past winter! The forecast if for upper 60s-low 70s, with a bit of rain in the near future. The weekend promises to be warm.

Minnesota had a stretch of summer weather this past winter too.

I recall a couple of days during the winter when the temperature actually got above 15 degrees, and the wind chill got as high as zero.

That's not quite shorts weather, but it's close. 8)

My husband and I went to see the movie,God's Not Dead, today. I was thrilled at the message and the way it was presented. I have to admit that the Christian music that young folks love today doesn't thrill me, but over all, the movie was wonderful. I'd love to see many more movies like this available, where you come away praising God for His greatness.

My area in Minnesota is the bull's-eye for a big snowstorm that will hit later today and continue tomorrow. It will bring up to 12" of snow, sleet, strong winds, and a grim reminder that winter ain't over 'till it's over. :?

It will be a good time to stay at home unless there is a strong desire to compete in a demolition derby on the roads.

My daughter-in-law (son's wife) has been on a 12-day business trip to Switzerland and Ireland, and will return here this evening on a direct flight from London. She has a very responsible job as Director of Engineering for a division of her company - the world's largest hard drive manufacturer.

I hope Delta Airlines planned ahead, and installed snow tires on the big bird for its landing in Minneapolis.
