HOW HIGH'S THE WATER MAMA (1959)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyXPozLyxHc

How high's the water, mama?
Two feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Two feet high and risin'

We can make it to the road in a homemade boat
That's the only thing we got left that'll float
It's already over all the wheat and the oats,
Two feet high and risin'

How high's the water, mama?
Three feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Three feet high and risin'

Well, the hives are gone,
I've lost my bees
The chickens are sleepin'
In the willow trees
Cow's in water up past her knees,
Three feet high and risin'

How high's the water, mama?
Four feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Four feet high and risin'

Hey, come look through the window pane,
The bus is comin', gonna take us to the train
Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain,
4 feet high and risin'

How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Five feet high and risin'

Well, the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin'

Well, it's five feet high and risin'

You're a funny man, Don. Come to think of it, we might have our own comedy show characters right here on the Porch. I do relish a good laugh every once in awhile. And, like crying, it is therapeutic, too!

Don, do you think you could send some of your rain here to sunny but parched Southern California? This is one of our driest years in history, and once again people are getting on the water desalination bandwagon. I expect to hear people say once again the L.A. River channel should be made into an alternate lane for traffic, but every time they say that, it rains hard enough to put that idea to rest.

I'd love to share the "wealth" with you folks, DeeJay, but I don't know how!

Why would people have one of these pet portals in the door to their house?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zimkYhUU0W0

Around here, we'd have raccoons and 'possems and squirrels, besides cats, sneaking inside. No thank you! It's remarkable the wild critters my hubby live-traps in our back yard. When Howard phoned the DNR to ask what to do with an opossum, the DNR told him to take the live trap down to the river and drown the poor creature (he had such a sad face, I sure couldn't have done it). People living out in the country don't want them released there, because something in their excrement, if it gets into horse feed, sickens and kills horses.

Why kill a possum? They don't hurt anybody, are gone within 24 hours of being spotted on your property--unless you have substantial acreage--and they are useful in that they eat roadkill and other stuff--they're nature's janitors.

Doctors Foster and Smith sell automatic pet doors, which use a SmartKey on your pet's collar, and can be programmed to let your dog or cat in and out at will, in only or out only. Any animal trying to get in this kind of door, without a SmartKey, is locked out. Here's their site; in the search field, type in automatic pet doors: www.drsfostersmith.com .

My brother has a pet door. They live in the country, lots of critters. But, they have 4 dogs and 2 cats who go in and out. Any wild critter dumb enough to enter wouldn't last long! Two of the dogs are hunters, ones a blue tick.

Just so you know, I've deactivated my Facebook account since it was badly hacked today. One of my friends lost $2500.00 (believing the hacker was me) and my nephew, Gary, received an instant message in Facebook saying the hacker had received $500,000 and wanted to share it with Gary. My nephew recognized it then as one of those scam people from Nigeria or wherever, and my nephew quickly phoned me.

I've asked everyone who was a friend of mine on Facebook to "unfriend" me.
Some of my relatives are leaving Facebook permanently, too, because they say the risk is too great and hackers are way too smart these days.

It's been an exhausting day and I'm going to bed earlier than usual.

Love you all

I've never had any desire to join Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, or any other social networking site.

Although many will claim they are good, harmless, and secure, I had heard wayyyy too many negatives about them to risk joining. Besides, I'm not that social. The phone and email works just fine for me. Any long-lost family members or "friends" will survive without me on Facebook.

Also, it's my understanding that it's impossible to deactivate or close a Facebook account (you may think it's closed). I have heard it remains open forever by Facebook, and that Facebook "owns" and has access to EVERYTHING on the account. That is scary if true.

Don, I found some wonderful, godly friends on Facebook and treasure the time I spent getting to know them. I feel bad that this happened and I'll miss Facebook terribly. Security has become a huge problem, I agree.

You are right about Facebook never deactivating an account. John opted out 3 years ago but his account is still there. Anyone can go there, use his password (once they determine what it is) and send out porn or anything under his name and he would never know it.

I deactivated my account yesterday but received a notice that all I had to do to reactivate it is to go to Facebook, enter my username and current password, and it's like I never left. Of course, it also means the hacker can still use my Facebook name and contact my FB friends which he was still doing late last night.

Besides my nephew who became concerned and phoned me, I also heard from my niece, Esther, who is a missionary in Africa who wrote me that this hacker had sent her a Facebook message, so bad that she wouldn't even copy, paste and send it to me. She knew it would upset me terribly. I have no idea what it was about and I'm afraid of the damage to my reputation something like that will cause. I had 250 plus friends on Facebook. I feel like I have leprosy or something. My FB friends, rightly so, want no association with my name at all.

I have asked the Lord to honor the song that has appeared at the bottom of each of my Faith Writers posts for quite a while. You can read it below. Maybe I should have printed it in much larger font.

Just color me "disappointed," while I sit here with tears soaking my pajamas.

My dear Mariane, I am so sorry for the evil that crept into your FB account, but I do not see it damaging your reputation. You stand out as a stalwart soldier of Christ to all who are close friends or even acquaintances with you. Satan and/or his demons cannot destroy your testimony of faith that shines so brightly. I'm glad you have committed this to God for HIm to cover you with His righteousness. Much love to you today from me and from so many more.

Marianne, this has happened to a number of my Deaf friends. You weren't actually hacked. What happens is that someone simply copies your public information. They make a second account with your exact name and with your profile picture, and then send a request to your friends from that account. All you need to do is report the fake account and warn your friends not to accept invites from it. FaceBook will remove the fake account promptly. Again, none of your private information would have been stolen, so you are safe to keep your current account open. I'm so sorry this happened to you and that a friend was taken in by it. Hugs. I hope you can open your account again.

That is so good to know, Sparrow! Thank you for posting. I think I will post a similar message on my facebook page, in advance of any problems, just to alert all my contacts, too.

Verna is right, Mariane. Everyone who knows you will certainly recognize that any faker posting porn under your name is an outlaw, that is not you. I consider my facebook page my bulletin board to the world, full of messages of God's provision of redemption and reconciliation. The contrast, should something similar happen to me, would be quite evident. So, dry your tears, dear sister.

Another thought that someone posted on fb was that the report of donated money (to whatever the purported cause) could also be a fake come on, but you know better if someone who know told you he or she was taken in by the fraud. We do certainly have to be "wise as serpents" ourselves, these days, don't we!

And, we don't have to be on a social network to be hit. Emailing and even phones, these days, are also included in scam rackets. I don't know how many friends' names have been taken and used by unknown persons to send phishing messages. The first time I caught it and alerted my friend Kay was one that just didn't look like Kay's emails. She has her own signature (automatically?) added, and on this email it was missing. So, first check: does it look right?

Another clue for me is the email includes a link (often only a link) we're supposed to click on, which I fear is designed to allow the scammer to access one's email address book. (Thinking it is from a friend "check this out!" etc., we click it without a thought.) That actually happened to one of our missionary pastors. Imagine trying to alert everyone in your address book, if you've lost your addresses! I suspect many email addresses are simply stolen online by someone who gains access to an email with many addresses in the "To:" box. So, keep the To box entries brief and put most into the Bcc box.

Finally, if I'm suspicious, I check the sender's email address. If it doesn't match the name, as I have it in my address book, I know it is stolen.

Phishing phone calls are another inlet. I really make use of our caller ID. We get so many recorded messages about our credit card accounts (we do not carry any balances, so we know the call isn't legit), plus more from strange area codes, that I don't even pick up the phone, anymore, for these calls. I figure if I don't recognize the caller from the ID, and it is something important, the caller can leave a message. I have no known experience of returning any of these calls and generating a huge charge on our phone bill, but I've heard that others have done! So, I'm totally leary of unknown area codes.

Today's watchword has to be "BEWARE!"

I'm sorry, folks, but I haven't told you the whole story. My account HAS been hacked. Please don't be fooled into thinking otherwise. He's still using it this morning, contacting my friends by instant messaging on FB, by phone and by Email. Facebook has been warned many times that they need to remove him but since they have 1 BILLION members now, what's so important about a little housewife in North Carolina.

Which is why I will never use Facebook. I do have a LinkedIn account, but don't really use it. On my cellphone, if I get a call from a number I don't recognize, I hit the ignore button. If they really want to get ahold of me, they can use voicemail. I go to a site called whocallsme.com to check unknown phone numbers, or do a reverse lookup on WhitePages.com . I've gotten phone calls from mortgage companies, who ask if a certain person is there, and I tell them no, nobody by that name uses this number, and besides I rent and therefore don't need a mortgage. Come on, people, I've had this number for five years; update your phone directories!
