I don't know which is the worse weather for driving - dense fog with almost zero visibility, or a white-out blizzard. I think dense fog might be worse, because one can become disoriented very easily.

When I was a senior in high school in 1957, I drove my sister and myself eight miles to a neighboring town to see a movie. On the way there the weather seemed fine, but after the movie it had turned into a full-blown blizzard with heavy snow and high winds.

It took 1 1/2 hours to drive the eight miles on a South Dakota highway to home. The wipers couldn't keep the snow off the windshield. Visibility was no more than 10 feet due to the heavy, blowing snow.

I recall having my driver's side window open with my head hanging out so I could see the edge of the road. My top speed was less than 5mph.

Needless to say, we were happy to get back home in one piece.

I was told that doctors determined I had contracted a light case of polio when I was 4 years old (1944). One morning after I woke up I couldn't walk, and couldn't even stand without help. I remember it like it happened yesterday. Control of my legs slowly returned after about a week or two.

About 2 weeks earlier I had stayed at my grandparent's farm for a few days. During that time a girl from a neighboring farm had been brought over to play with me for a day. She was stricken with polio a few days later. Then, 2 weeks later I came down with it and couldn't walk.

That neighbor girl ended up in an iron lung, then, I lost track of her.

Deejay, when I was a child in Waverly, New York, the snows were so deep that walking to school 2 blocks away required an adult to walk with you! The snowbanks on either side were above my head many times. Three feet of fallen snow wasn't that uncommon and add that to the drifts and you can't imagine how paralyzing it was. But I never remember one day school was called off because of the weather. I saw the headline on the Drudge Report that today is the coldest day in a century in the U.S. and I'm sure that's true. Somehow I think we had much more snow when I was a kid, though. Often we couldn't get the front door open and Daddy had to crawl through the window to get outside to go to work on the railroad. We had only one snowplow in our little town which was hardly sufficient. Today every town is far better equipped to handle snow (not to mention snowblowers, which every father today loves!

Don, John had the same experience you did with Polio. He had a mild case but it left him with a protruding part of his chest which was more noticeable when he was young and thinner. That was a scarey time. I lost my best friend and several others in our little town, my brother-in-law and niece and church friend were stricken with Polio and still carry the paralysis of one limb or another. Now my niece is experiencing post-Polio syndrome and had to quit her job because the weakness is now taking over her body. She was a hospital administrator before she had to quit. Thank God for the Salk vaccine.

On a happier note, I ran across this site and found it so delightful I wanted to share it with you!
There is a section on babies and toddlers and if you start at the top right with the first short video, it will automatically go straight through each one. They are hysterically funny! I haven't perused other sections of the site but there is one on puppies which I can't wait to view, and others as well.

Enjoy!

It's been a busy Australia Day and tomorrow is a public holiday. I look forward to flying Norms eagle kite down by the Hawkesbury river with son and granddaughter after a BBQ breakfast.

Hmmm...post-polio syndrome...

I've heard of it, but never researched it. That could explain some of what I have begun to experience with my legs the last few years - 68 years after my polio.

Along with noticeable increasing weakness, they don't always respond in the way they need to respond - sometimes causing instability, tripping and even falling. They don't always move where I want them to move, or when. That is troublesome...

There is probably nothing that can easily be done to "fix" the problem. Therefore, I have never spoken to my doctor about it. I just don't want him digging around trying to find something else treatable...and billable. I have enough things going on without adding more.

I had never heard of post-Polio syndrome until we moved to the beach a few years ago. We became friends with a man and his wife and he was experiencing dreadful PPS. He was in a wheel chair and was paralyzed from his waist down. I asked how long he had been like this and he said he became ill with Polio during the big scare in the mid-50s. It was a light case and he seemed to recover for the most part. He went to college, married, and had 3 children. He worked for the VA in their Raleigh office, lived a normal life and sort of forgot he even had had Polio when he was younger. When he was in his late 60s he began to feel weak, very tired and his legs felt like they weren't supporting him. He was overweight, he said, by about 20-25 lbs from sitting at a desk at his job for so many years and he started falling a lot. In a matter of weeks, he was using a cane, then a walker, and finally a wheel-chair and electric scooter like a Hoveround. He had hand controls put in his van since he could no longer move his feet and drove his wife around like always.

About 7 or 8 years after he first experienced PPS, he died. I never did know whether his heart gave out or what happened. He was very active in local politics and narrowly missed being elected mayor a couple of times. A really swell guy. Oddly, his wife died soon after he did and his family said she just gave up, wouldn't eat and wanted to die. Since John had also had a mild case of polio in the 50s, I have wondered what the chances are that he would develop PPS. He gets very tired and says his legs hurt a great deal and he has fallen many times, in the house and at the mall and in parking lots.

I worry a lot about my niece, Debby, too. She lives alone and all of us worry about her falling. She has worn a full leg brace on her left leg since she was 6 years old. She is now 59. She said her weakness is more pronounced now and she feels she will be unable to walk at all before long.

I don't tell you this, Don. to make you anxious about your health, but just so you'll be aware that PPS apparently happens often to those who had mild cases when they were young and to be alert to any significant changes in your limbs, particularly.

All for now. Be blessed. Jesus is coming soon!

Tell your doctor, Don. It's best to know what's going on with your body to prevent if possible something you don't want going on.

When I was a little girl growing up in Ohio, a "snow day" was one when you put on your warmest clothes to go to school and couldn't wait to get home and make snow angels!

Yesterday afternoon my doorbell rang. Waiting there in our below zero temperature and fierce wind was a neighbor lady from two houses away. She had brought a loaf of fresh-baked, still-warm-from-the-oven banana bread for me. Yumm!

She and her husband were rarely ever socially involved with any of the neighbors, and chose to stay to themselves. Several times in past years I was asked to watch their house inside and out while they were on vacation. During the weeks before and following Carol's death last spring, they either called or came over several times to check up on me.

While she was here yesterday, she invited me to go out to dinner with her and her husband soon after our nasty temps climbed above zero.

They are good, caring people - the real deal. Not many of them exist anymore.

Here is the relief woodcarving I finished a couple of weeks ago after not doing any carving for almost four years.

Note: I don't use any power tools - only carving knives. Also, I draw the pictures of my own design.

Oh, Don, I am so happy for you, to have such lovely people in your neighborhood!

Speaking of cold - what was it this morning, -15, -12? Depends on the thermometer, I guess. Howard and I have a running "fight" about whose thermometer to believe. He loves all that technology and we have digital thermometers in several locations, including our next door neighbor's house, to keep an eye on things when she goes to her daughter's.

This morning I told him it is amazing how warm 35 degrees F feels (MY thermometer on our enclosed front porch) when coming in from shoveling in minus whatever degrees it is outside. He insisted HIS thermometer reads 29 degrees on our front porch. Anyway, it felt cozy!

Here's something I have to share with all of you. Our little granddaughter Elissa's solo (in Hebrew) at Saturday evening's concert; they also sang songs in Latin and German. She turned eight in October and is actually too young for this homeschoolers' choir, but she auditioned and they let her in, anyway.

Today is a little bit chilly around the edges...as was yesterday...and the days before that. They are saying that tonight and tomorrow will be even colder...like...frost-bite in about 5 minutes.

Just a reminder:
Ya might want to slip on a jacket before goin' outside.

Where I live--
In the mid 60's today, 20's tonight, 30's tomorrow with maybe about an inch of snow. It's a topsy-turvy world.

Wonderful wood carving, Don in message and execution!

Edy, Your little granddaughter has such a sweet voice and remarkable poise for one so young.

Mariane, Did I hear you're the one going to get a big snow storm! Oh my!

Y'all stay as warm as you can!
