Week 2 Topic - PEN AND PAPER

Postby Deb Porter » Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:37 pm

Hi ho, Challengeers! You did a great job jumping into the first topic, and now we have a really nice writer relevant one. (Aren't I good to you?)

Our second topic for this quarter is:

PEN AND PAPER
http://www.faithwriters.com/writing-challenge-intro.php

As always, you don’t need to use the words "pen and paper" in your entry. However, the topic does need to be the central focus of your entry. You can do with it whatever you want--literal, symbolic, whatever. Any genre; any style, but you do need to write more than 150 words and less than 750 (for our new Challengeers).

AND it is Pen AND Paper, not Pen OR Paper.

As always, have fun with the topic and enjoy yourself. Feel free to chat about the topic here.

Love, Deb

I like this quarters topics so far. Not because I have all kinds of creative ideas floating around in my brain but because I don't have to pull out the dictionary or google on line to try to understand the topic. The topics are quite obvious. Yay!

Much easier to understand the meaning this quarter...but...I'm still as stuck as ever. One thing is for sure when it comes to me being a writer...God gets all the glory because writing doesn't come naturally for me. Even with a creative idea in mind I don't have the ability to just sit down and let the words flow. It takes a while. I can't do it without God but that's not a bad place to be in because I really don't want to write without His ideas, direction, anointing, inspiration, etc. To God be the glory.

:superhappy :superhappy :superhappy Yay, God!

I missed last week's topic because we were on vacation. I am looking forward to getting back into the challenge. Now to come up with an interesting take on this week's topic.... :?

What about hyphenated words in the word count? My word processor counts hyphenated words (like "worn-out", "wanna-be", etc.) as one word, so according to that one, I am within proper word count. But what is the rule on that here?

The person who checks entries for correct word count uses MS Word, which counts hyphenated words as one word. So no worries on that account.

Even if they were counted as two words, if one or two hyphenated words put you very slightly over the count, there's a TINY bit of grace (because different word counters may behave differently). So you wouldn't be disqualified for "worn-out" or "wanna-be" if they put you over (but all the same, it's best to be sure that you're okay).

Deb makes every effort to be sure an entry isn't DQ'd on a technicality. If you're significantly over, and she catches it soon enough, she'll let you know and give you an opportunity to trim a few words. She's awesome like that.

Well, I did it. For the first time in over a year, I actually had enough mental ability free to sit down and write something for the writing challenge. I have to admit though...I kinda regurgitated stuff from classes that I've had lately. :sorry

It's mildly terrifying at this point for me. I've done nothing but paper writing and monograph write ups for the past year. At the same time, it was liberating to just write. I really need to get back into the habit of just writing...to write.

I'm finalizing the Pen and Paper Challenge now. All I can say is "WOW." Blessed to see so many old Challengeers back in Challenge action, but also blown away by the ratings for entries overall. The competition is intense.

I'll be back in a little while to give the all clear.
