Week 3 Topic - First World Problem

Postby Deb Porter » Fri Apr 18, 2014 2:57 am

Hi ho, Challengeers. Here we go again, and this time our topic is a phrase that's become fairly common in recent years. It is, usually, used to put down someone having a bit of a whine about some minor issue in their life. Not sure who first coined the phrase, but it is very much a part of the evolution of our language. The topic for Week 3 is:

FIRST WORLD PROBLEM
http://www.faithwriters.com/writing-challenge-intro.php

Clarify the topic here: http://bit.ly/NSU9em

Quite simply, it means the little annoyances we face as part of living in a first world country. For example:

I hate having so many remote controls.
It's so annoying when people use the express line with 9 instead of 8 items.

Got it?

I actually once spoke in church about this theme and used this video to introduce the topic. I think it’s the best illustration of “first world problems” online (and I just love Scooter Magruder):

Top 100 First World Problems

Inspired? Great. Now it's time to go for it and get your creative on.

As always, you don’t need to use the phrase “first world problem” in your entry. However, you do need to show the meaning through your story/poem/article.

Most important thing, as always, is to have fun. Don't take the topics too seriously. Just let your creativity flow and enjoy yourself. Experiment. Try new things. Try old things. Let the crazy out.

Enjoy the creative process and feel free to chat about the topic here.

Love, Deb

Last week was the first time I've entered a Challenge in over two years. Boy, oh boy, am I rusty. Not the greatest story but at least it's a new start. Don't know if I have it in me to do two weeks in a row but we'll see. The video is hilarious and does a great job defining the phrase.

Oh man! I just recently joined FaithWriters and missed out on this challenge. As someone who moved from Kansas to Kenya, a third world country, I have so much to say about first world problems. I have a whole blog dedicated to it! lol

I guess I'll get 'er next time. *sigh*
