Bookends Topic ... Right in the Middle of the Quarter

Postby Deb Porter » Thu Jan 30, 2014 7:46 pm

I can hardly believe we are up to Week 5 of the Jan-March Writing Challenge. We are zipping along! So what's the topic for Week 5?

BOOKENDS
http://www.faithwriters.com/writing-challenge-intro.php

As always this quarter, do with the topic whatever you desire, as long as the main focus of your entry relates to "bookends" in some way. You can go with the literal meaning (the things that hold up books) or you can play around with it in some way (such as people being like bookends or an event being bookended by things). As long as it is obviously about the topic, you are fine.

Have fun, and feel free to chat about the topic here.

Love, Deb

I am at a total loss. Other than the obvious, bookends, meaning those things that keep books from falling down, I haven't a clue. Lots of people will write about those, probably. Might sit this one out.
God Bless the beasts and the children
Give them shelter from the storms.
Children are our tomorrow
Keep them daily from the sorrow
Of the beasts in life

Lynn, you can used it as a noun or a verb. This definition from Dictionary.com may help:

book·end
noun
1.
a support placed at the end of a row of books to hold them upright, usually used in pairs.
2.
one of two things occurring or located at either end of something else: two events that served as bookends to my career.
verb (used with object)
3.
to occur or be located at the beginning and end of: His term in office was bookended by crises.

So it definitely doesn't have to just be about holding books. Give it time to percolate. There's no rush. The best ideas often come out of the blue.

Sigh. Ending on a bookish note, eh? I and my mind are upended. Mayhaps it is time for me to emulate my Fifi kit, relax and take a luxurious bath. What a note to end on. If my brain even makes an attempt to book its ends . . . where is Noel when you want to write the perfect ending? Methinks I'll hie to the corner and lick my wounds in wicked anticipation of what might fall from my brain matter this week. Thank you for your sweet encouragement, We'll do our part by "keeping up the good work". Difficult as it is to end this particular quarter with any form of brilliance. My brain cells are flinging sand in my eyes, eager to end this day . . .

This is much easier for me than last weeks topic. I found even with the "real bookends" (which I decided to use) there is plenty of space to play around. I'm having a ball.

I guess I have to get use to the Challenge. I didn't really think my first entry was all that great, but it placed. Then I thought my work on the topic "Making ends meet" was really much better written - and it didn't place. I'm sure the two typos didn't help! I need to learn to proofread. So, we'll see what happens with "Light at the end of the tunnel".

As you read my pieces - please bring on the red ink. I do need all the help I can get to be the writer God's wants me to be.

Have a great week - Trudy

I turned the heat on, but so for, nothing is happening. I guess I need to give it a little more time.

Oooooohhh....this one sounds like fun! My mind is already brainstorming!

a library with different kinds of bookends
two similar people/things (at the beginning and ending of an event)
reading the endings of books first
books tied at the ends of something

ooooohhh...the list goes on and on....

I love this topic! My muse perked up and went to work when I read it this evening. Jan asked in her "Topic" lesson what kind of challenge topics we prefer, and this is mine. A specific "thing" that has many other definitions.

After the obvious meaning at dictionary.com is: "to occur or be located at the beginning and end of". Now THAT's pretty wide open. ;)

I think my first "great" idea is a little too far out of the box, but I may write it anyway, just to WRITE something. :D

Hi, so good to be back in the swing of writing and chatting again on the Forums. Must admit this week's challenge is very interesting and I am sure will bring out very interesting ideas. Few are buzzing around my head, and am planning some ideas, midst being spoilt for my birthday.
Well let's see what this week brings out in us all. Was too late for last week so better be more prepared this time around! :D

Wow, I think my muse has been on a long holiday. These are great topics, but I'm not getting any inspiration at all.

May just have to play around a little. Been a (long) while since I entered and I miss it.

Glynis, hope your muse kicks in. Or is it because you are so busy working on your manuscript?

Well, I got off to a good start, missed last week's. Just didn't work out. Not sure about this one yet. I have an idea perking, but.... not just sure yet.
