Again...A Feedback, Red Ink Question. :-)

I was just thinking (perhaps, the first mistake). :D

When Deb announces it's time to throw a brick, she always adds "Say Red Ink, Please" if you want constructive comments. How do you comment before it's time to throw a brick? Do you just write constructive comments and hope no one is offended, or do you wait for brick throwing?

Maybe the answer is obvious. And that is, most people want constructive comments.
But I was just wondering...and perhaps some newbies, too :|

Lillian, comment as you feel you want to. I just included that note on the "throw a brick" thread to encourage people to let people know if they want it.

But honestly, the best way to do it is for people to mark their actual entries with that note at the bottom. That way, everyone will know from the outset if people want critique or not.

If at all in doubt, you could always offer to provide a bit of critique if they would like to send you a PM. That way, you aren't putting it on their entry (in case they don't want anything heavy), and it puts the onus on them to seek it out. Just a thought.

On a few in beginners, I mentioned something general they could improve on, and told them to PM me for details if they wanted to.

Yes, that's a good idea, and I've done that on occasion. But I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing, and was looking for guidelines; something that Deb and you have done. :-)

Thanks,

Lillian

Hey Lillian, I am so glad you asked this question. I actually always forget that we are supposed to even say that we want ink of any type while I am throwing my brick, it isn't until I am looking up at Deb's remark after I've thrown mine in that I usually think, "Oh, people are going to think I only want them to say good stuff about my piece because I haven't asked for any ink." Having said that though, the way I personally feel about "red ink" on someone's piece, even if it is asked for, is there should always be a certain amount of decorum. If it is a sentence or two mixed in with things you liked, that is fine I think, whether they have asked for it or not, unless maybe they are brand new. However, if it is going to be several points that you want to share with them / there doesn't seem to be much positive to say, I would send a PM. To me its the difference between calling someone out on the carpet in front of a whole bunch of people or doing it in private. I think for the most part though folks at FW are very respectful of one another. And you are always respectful Lillian. Blessings for the weekend you two.
