Wk 1 Topic - FRESH START

Postby Deb Porter » Fri Jan 06, 2017 1:28 am

Happy New Year to all our Challengeers. It's great to have you back with us for the 2017 Writing Challenge. And I've chosen a perfectly appropriate topic to get the year started. The Week 1 topic is:

FRESH START
http://www.faithwriters.com/writing-challenge-intro.php

Have fun with the topic, and you can write in any genre or style you like. You can do with the topic whatever your heart desires. AS LONG AS SOME MEANING OF THE TOPIC FRESH START, IS THE MAIN FOCUS OF YOUR ENTRY ... and as long as the entry conforms to the rules.

No definition required for this one. :D Have fun and be creative.

As always, don't forget to check your word count before submitting (entries must be between 150 and 750 words). A very reliable and free online word count check tool is this one:

http://www.wordcountertool.com/

Also, PLEASE, always hit the preview button to check your entry before hitting the final submit button. This is the only way to make sure your entry is correctly formatted (or even uploaded correctly). Once you have previewed your entry, close the preview page and hit the submit button.

Finally, once submitted, do a check to make sure your entry is safely in the list:
http://www.faithwriters.com/myaccount/wc-entry-list.php).

So come on, Challengeers. This is your year to hone your skills by writing to topic, word count, and deadline. The Writing Challenge has always been a great personal challenge for each writer. Make the most of every topic.

Help! I'm having trouble formatting my entry. Instead of quotes and apostrophes, I get strange characters in the final piece. Can you help? Thanks - Mike

Hi Mike. That can be a real pain, I know. It's usually because of the formatting from Word. You need to save it as a plain text file, or put it into notepad or something similar. Close it, then copy from that. Hopefully, that should save it without the formatting.

Otherwise, type over all your quotation marks, apostrophes, semicolons and colons. Those are the usual culprits.

This FAQ may help.

Hello Deb

Mike and I are still 'challenged' with the formating. Because of our schedules, we are sending in our entries with the 'problem' areas as we don't have time to address them before tomorrow afternoon. Just wanted you to know. For some reason even in text file things don't work right.

Have a great day. - Appreciate you all so much - Trudy and Mike

Hi Trudy and Mike.

Bad news. Both your entries are blank. If you have time, could you resubmit them both. Just copy and paste them into the submission box area. Don't worry about any possible formatting issues. I know some browsers are showing weird formatting (one of our judges commented). Chrome seems to be fine, but Firefox and IE may show weird characters.

I'll send you an email as well. Hopefully I'll catch you before entries close.

Love, Deb

Thanks Deb - Nothing we've tried seems to work - even copying and pasting. Not sure if it's our 'computer illeteracy' or what.

I will try to post them as regular articles and see what happens - Trudy

Fwiw, my "Fresh Start" story posted sans italics, in spite of using the appropriate code ( <i> word </i> ) as I have been doing for 11 years. It's the first time, ever, that it failed to work. A busy cyber gremlin...

I wonder if others had that problem too. I'll try to remember to check with Mike.

My "Fresh Start" story not only didn't post italics where I needed them, but the odd symbols are replacing all the apostrophes and quotation marks today, just as Trudy mentioned... it wasn't like that when I read reviews during the last week. Amy's story is also messed up. I thought it was my old computer playing tricks, but it's across my devices. :?

ETA... Everyone's entries are messed up...

Thanks Ann. This happened last week, too. Mike had to fix some code on each Level's page. Unfortunately, we'd hoped that would fix things from then on. I'll let him know.
