I would like some feedback on my new series please

Postby sonyaluvsjesus » Sun Mar 17, 2013 10:23 am

I am working on a series of devotionals based on The Lord's Prayer. I would appreciate some feed back :) Here is Part One:
The Lord’s Prayer Part One
Matthew 6:5-6
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (NIV)
This passage is right at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, as recorded by Matthew, and is part of what we call “The Sermon on the Mount” and the introduction to The Lord’s Prayer. In Chapter Five Jesus is teaching on the old covenant, the law, versus the new covenant, grace. He says over and over, “You have heard it said” followed by, “But I tell you.”
The people had been living with the law, as given to Moses by God, for more than a thousand years and in Jesus’ day the religious leaders, The Pharisees, had added so many rules to the law as to make it even more impossible for the people to keep.
Jesus said of them in Matthew 23:5-7 that, "Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. 7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’”
Instead of leading the people to God, the Pharisees used their position of influence for their own glory. They are the hypocrites He is referring to in verse five. Our prayers are to be a sweet time of communing with our Heavenly Father, not a show for others to admire our holiness. Jesus said if we make our prayers a show to garner acclaim for ourselves, we have received all that we will ever get for our efforts.

Thanks, Sonya

I like it. You make some great points and clear up some parts that can be confusing. I always used to think it strange that he told us not to repeat the same prayer but then gave us the Lord's Prayer which many repeat without giving it much thought.

Some suggestions might be to start of with a real life story that people can relate to. perhaps use the Lord's prayer and how people will saying it in rote like I mention. Or another idea might be to share a time when you did something that was showing and vain then transition into the Bible message. You also may want to double space between paragraphs to make it easier to read.

overall I think you did a great job of explaining the scriptures and I liked the section you picked. Personally I love devotions that include a prayer because so many people don't understand how to pray. This piece will help with that. Keep at it, you have a way with words.

Hello sonyaluvsjesus,

You might want to check out the change we are making with our devotionals. FaithWriters devotional is on countless websites around the world. For years we have utilized devotional from Randy Chambers. We have now changed this policy and are accepting submissions from all members.

At this posting I am looking for devotionals for and that lead up to Easter. Max 250 words fully edited and ready to post.

Go here and see the rules and view the format on the two that are already posted.
