This is something I've just dashed off, so don't criticise it too much! Seriously, friendly critiques are welcome. Hope this is a useful poem.
Jesus, did you die for me?
I know it's sin to doubt.
But from the tithe of proven saints
I could only be left out.
If atonement has a limit
All God’s hope is for the few
Small new birth in all my thought
And less in all I do.
Millions have been saved by God
But billions flee to sin,
The Spirit true gives fiery faith
And mine is mixed, weak, dim.
But if you did die in pain for me
And I just turned away?
The thought knocks on my withered heart
To sharp for words to say.
I know God has no joy in wrath
And bids all to repent.
I know that love for all the world
Was why my Lord was sent.
I have walked the lonesome valley,
But my God is with me now
May I tremble at the compromise,
My soul will still allow!
May I not shrink but grow again,
In vision of Christ’s love.
And rest all faith and fruit upon,
My Saviour above.
