Judging a book by its cover

Postby 67hoosier » Sat Mar 22, 2014 7:25 pm

I have had the misfortune of a lot of people judging my book by its cover. The title is called, "The Weapons of Our Warfare: God's Arsenal for Victorious Living". Unfortunately, the majority of the people immediately think that the book is about the full armor of God, from Ephesians chapter 6.
The last two reviews that I have received also state that the reader thought they were going to learn about the armor of God. I am including the latest review I have received to hopefully clear some things up and encourage others to take a second look.
The review follows, but thank you in advance for taking a look at this post:

Reviewed by Lee Ashford for Readers' Favorite

The Weapons of Our Warfare by Patrick A. Bucksot is a wonderful scriptural dissertation of the weapons Christians have been given by God to carry out the spiritual warfare in which we spend our every hour. I have to confess this is not what I thought the book was going to be about. I selected this book to review because at my Church we are going to be doing Ephesians chapter 6 next Sunday. I mistakenly interpreted the title to be a reference to the spiritual armor of God which is the subject of that chapter. However, what I found instead was a superb extension of what we should be doing once we’ve donned that spiritual armor. Armor is primarily defensive. Weapons are offensive. Both must be properly used to win a battle. Patrick Bucksot has distilled the essence of God’s arsenal for us to better understand how we are to face - and defeat - the enemy and his many temptations.
The Weapons of Our Warfare is, truly, a reference book that has a place on the bookshelf of every Christian. Nothing in this book cannot also be found in the Bible, but Mr. Bucksot has sought out each and every weapon available to us, and discoursed upon them within the pages of this book. In many ways, one could consider this book a Bible Study. Indeed, it would serve quite well as a Bible Study text, in which each chapter of the book would be the topic of prayer, study, and discussion in successive weeks. Mr. Bucksot has faithfully followed the leading of the Holy Spirit to produce this work. I most adamantly suggest it should belong in the library of every Christian.

Sounds like a wonderful book. :bow

Keep them daily from the sorrow

Have you made the book available for the Free Read for Review Program? I'm not sure how long your book is, but I might be able to read it and give you my opinion. I'm not a big title person, but I know others are and it really can set up a certain expectation. It's probably too late to change your title, but in Jan's Writing Basics she talks a bit about titles.

I can see why some people might mistake it. I don't think that is where I would necessarily go. This review is amazing though and it does sound like a wonderful idea for a Bible study.

Judging from the review, the misleading cover led to a pleasant surprise and a great review.
The cover just might be in the plus column for you. God may have had a hand in that, and He never makes a mistake. :D

It does sound like a wonderful book!

I love to write. Nothing escapes the crush I have on the written word. I'm hooked on words!!

Thanks for the comments. I have not joined the "Free Read for Review Program" because I haven't figured out where to go or how to do this. The only thing I have seen about reviews is the link with Christian Book Marketing. I am in a catch 22 with that. Funds are tight and can't afford this, but it also seems that I can't afford not to do this.

If there is another way, please let me know what I am missing.

Thanks,

Patrick Bucksot
