Comma Anonymous

Postby jaybird » Mon Nov 25, 2013 7:16 pm

My name is Jason and I'm addicted to commas. I have the same malady with Oscar Wilde.

"I have spent most of the day putting in a comma and the rest of the day taking it out."
— Oscar Wilde

If you have the same ailment, you're not alone.

And yet you wrote a whole post without a single one. :P I think all of us struggle with commas. I've never edited anything that didn't have too many or too few commas, and I often have to check with another editor to help me figure out commas!

Commas aren't so hard; just earn the rules and practice them. If you choose to break the rules, know why. Make sure you don't over-do it unless for effect... and realize you are taking a chance!

When I write, the commas flow like a babbling brook. Every editing pass I take out more. Occasionally I add one. But take your tag line's advice anddon't sweat the small stuff.

It helps to have good editors to catch what you miss. 8^)
