Tate Publishing

Postby gpm » Fri Mar 01, 2013 9:31 pm

Can as many as possible give me any feedback on Tate publishing I sent in a manuscript and they
want to publish it but they want $3990.00 as a retainer which sounds funny to me. Supposedly after 1000 copies of my book are sold. They give me the money back.My wife went on line and checked them out.She found some very unkind reviews about them two writers took them to the BBB due to poor treatment along the publishing process. I do not know much about publishing But I always thought they were to pay you to publish the book not the other way around.I do not plan on paying that much money out of my pocket.Any feedback is welcome .Has anyone had personal experience with these people?
Thanks Greg :coolsign

Here's a link to an old post here at FaithWriters on this very subject. I hope you'll find the information to be helpful. I think you're wise to look up reviews and ask here.

And nice to meet you, Greg. Welcome to FaithWriters. :)

I'm glad you are doing research before giving them any more. There are some better publishing companies to go through, that will cost a lot less than Tate and provide better services.

Just be careful to read all the fine print before signing anything :)

Greg, that old thread should help, but please take care.

Tate gives the impression that they are a traditional press by calling for manuscript submissions and "accepting" some. But most people suspect they accept just about anything. They are subsidy press.

The possibility of selling 1,000 copies of a book is pretty unlikely. I think they probably count on that.

You will never find better feedback than in this particular Absolute Write Thread:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/sho ... .php?t=992

Particularly in the more recent pages where an ex-employee is speaking out, and there is also a post there somewhere (in the last 12 months) which includes a link to a staff meeting that is painful.

My advice, always, would be to seek a traditional publisher (a real one) first of all.

Love, Deb

I check these types of outfits out with a couple of resource sites:

Preditors and Editors (Tate is not recommended).

Writer Beware (Tate gets two "Big" thumbs-down).
