Re: Be a Better Writer--CHARACTERIZATION
Hello Jan and Rachel M! While reading through this lesson, I kept thinking of the different characters in my novel-in-progress. Some of these characters are more rounded than others, but I'd have to say that my main character, Kristen, is the most rounded of all of them. A lot of factors went into t...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Okay, here's one with a flat antagonist: http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level4-previous.php?id=44721 This antagonist is mean just to be mean because, well...he's the devil's advocate. Reading this piece now, I can see how flat he is! In this case, how would you suggest I give him more dimens...

Re: Be A Better Writer--ANTAGONISTS
Antagonists, yay! Great subject :D In the novel I'm writing, I've chosen to write out the details of the antagonist's parts last because I know he's going to be the hardest. I want him to come across as worthless and horrid, but I don't want him to be a cliché. I still need to put a lot of thought i...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Devotionals
I said I would post my Challenge entry for this week after it went live, so here it is. It is nonfiction. I don't believe it falls into either a devotional or a Bible study, even though it does connect with God. Like I mentioned, this is my typical style of nonfiction, which is basically me pulling ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic
Thanks for your feedback on the Vilfred piece, Jan. Yeah, my writing is all over the board: nonfiction of many sorts, inspirational fiction, romantic fiction, humorous fiction, and yes, fantasy. The character Vilfred the troll has been with me since I began writing. Someday, it might just turn into ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Writing on topic
Jan, I read your "yellow" piece. To me, the "high yellow" connection was very on topic and I'm thinking that is all you needed to be on topic. The shawl and flowers could have been any color. With the dress, shawl, and flowers being yellow, the jaundiced eyes felt like just anoth...

Re: Be a Better Writer--Devotionals
Jan, After reading your devotional, I realize I'm a scripture skimmer. The fact that I know I need to get to the store before the kids get home might have something to do with it, but I skimmed the second scripture and ignored the third altogether! Loved the devotional, though, how all your thoughts...

Re: Winners - 2013 Fiction Page Turner Contest
Wow. I'm honored and floored. When I saw my name included with the list of finalists, I was humbled. I recognized many of those names, and I've seen their writing. There was so much talent in that list, I was delighted just to be a part of it. All I can think of now is that I didn't get here on my o...

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
Jan, thanks for the clarification on "awhile" versus "a while." I've written it down on a Post-it note for future reference.
If there was a Jan App, I would replace my dictionary app with it in a hot second.

Re: Jan's New Writing Lessons -- COMMONLY MISUSED WORDS
The correct use of blond and blonde surprised me. I have always been confused with that extra "e" and had, until now, assumed it was an English/British thing. It seems that almost every day I'm writing, I run into trouble with figuring out the proper use of words. I have the Dictiona...

Re: Writing Software
Technically, a writer can write without novel software. Heck, they can even write without a computer. The point of writing software is to make it easier in keeping track of things, especially big projects like novels. Most novel software (the good ones) will keep track of writing notes, projects id...
