Re: Be a Better Writer--DEALING WITH NEGATIVE CRITIQUE

I've always welcomed the critiques, even when it stung to have my deficiencies pointed out. But my image has always been too important to me, and I need that humility that comes from recognizing my weaknesses. I just do better the next time when I see what I'm doing wrong. That said, one commenter o...

Oh, you misunderstood me. I liked it just the way it was, too. It just used way more telling than I usually use.

Re: Be a Better Writer--TELL, DON'T SHOW? WHAT?

I get in trouble sometimes for not telling enough, but it's because I don't like long descriptive passages. I get bored, and want to skip over them. So naturally when I write I don't describe my characters or the scenes in detail. I like leaving it to the reader's imagination. I also like to keep th...

Congratulations to Rachel for ranking 24 overall and to Allison for coming in 25 overall! Happy Dance! :superhappy :welcome Shann, you sly thing...what about your THIRD PLACE EC?!?!? Congratulations! Still waiting, but at least the situation at work is resolving. I had a good conversation...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

That's so cool, Amy! It's awesome how God connects people. Hope you and Andy feel better soon. Well, no word yet, and they said it would be another week or two before they have an answer. Meanwhile, I had something happen at work which resulted in me feeling as if it is a very hostile, unsupportive ...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

You guys have been chatty! I'll write more later tonight but I wanted to throw in a huge prayer request. I'm still waiting to hear back from the job after the interview - it's been a week and a half, which was the time she told me within which I would hear from her. Plus stuff has been going on at w...

Our tree does NOT look like that anymore, either. That was taken a day before they cut everything down.

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

We may have some amazingly beautiful nature things out here in the West, but someday I'd like to see fireflies. Even when I visited Michigan it's one thing I never saw. I should visit you just to see them. Yes, please feel free to give her my number, too. My free days are few and far betwe...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

Does she just need a friend, or to get away for a day, Shann? I'm not far from UCLA; I could take her out to walk in the botanical gardens or see a movie or something. :( I had my interview, and it went well, and that's all I'm going to say on a public forum. I'm not counting my chickens, but it wou...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

Yay for you, Rachel! I can't wait to hear about your experiences. (Obviously) it's one of my favorite subjects. I think once I get settled in my new job, I can start looking into the doula thing. One of our travelers was talking to me about it; she runs a group of doulas who were mostly la...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

I feel ya, JP. I'm counting down the days until I can get an interview and convince somewhere else that they want me. I've had more than my fair share of "scoldings" over really stupid stuff in the last few weeks, when we've been bursting at the seams just trying to have enough nurses for our patien...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

I'm here, Pup. Tired - so tired. Yes, they have day shift openings available now but hardly anyone from nights is biting. We'd rather work somewhere else than day shift on our unit. Politics, mostly. And I wouldn't be able to stand working with at least two of our doctors. Ethically it's a daily bat...

Re: Be a Better Writer--BREAKING THE RULES, part 2

Thanks, Leah! I love The Giver, too--have read it dozens of times, and I used to teach it, so I know it backwards and forwards. I'm highly skeptical of the movie--have you seen the trailer? It doesn't seem to resemble the book in the least. I'll watch it, because it exists, but I'm kind of expectin...

Re: Pacific Coast Rest-Stop

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! I've placed 2nd a couple times, but this was my first 1st, so I am very excited about it. Back sitting at home on call. It's almost 3am, and no call yet, so I'm probably going to lose another 12 hours of work. And then when I'm off I'll be getting ca...
