ESL wannabe writer
I'm mentoring a wannabee writer who is struggling with basic English grammar, as English is not his native language. Does anyone have suggestions as to material that may help?

Re: And and Then, and spacing after period...
Substituting no indentation for two spaces between paragraphs doesn't happen in the books I've read on my e-reader. Perhaps that depends on the publisher? Also, what if you are writing for a print book - or a book that will be both hard copy and electronic? Then what?

Re: Smashing Writer's Block
One of the things that first needs to be done is analyze why you have writers block - not the excuses you give but real reasons. Are you waiting for a divine inspiration? Perhaps writing prompts and set times where you write anyway will be your best answer. Do you have problems with interruptions - ...

Re: Writer Research
My father did a lot of genealogy research and included little bits about incidents in their lives when he found it, carefully noting if it was historical or just family tradition. One of the incidents is begging to be written into a story - a project I am beginning to work on. When I started on-line...

Re: Nosy Narrators
It's been over 50 years, but I can still remember as a child absolutely hating it when the narrator inserted themselves in the story. It disrupts the flow of the words and shuts down the imagination.

Re: Writing for Children - Picture Books Part 1
I have a picture book in mind, but the illustrations are what makes the story come together. So how do I handle the problem of the illustrator so that the story I want to tell happens?

Re: Purple Prose
I understand that purple prose is a pitfall, and the choice of words you use should move the action forward or develop character. When I read over my work, however, I see a lack of color and very limited engaging of the senses. How much non-essential description can I plug in without turning shades ...

Re: Be a Better Writer--AVOIDING ETHNIC STEREOTYPES
One of the ways stereotypes can be used to advance the story comes with a story I'm working on. The strength of the conflict comes because of the MC's seeing his opponents as a stereotype, and having that image confirmed in his head through certain actions. Somehow I have to find a way to counter th...

Re: Be a Better Writer--TRANSPARENCY
This is a gospel reflection I wrote for the church bulletin (I do several each year). I like to "personalize" - or as Jan says, make it transparent. While it was written 3 years ago, it seems just as pertinent to today's events. Where is God? After last week’s tragedy many were asking ques...
